The summer solstice, June 21, marks the longest day of the year—a time many of us look forward to as a chance to stay up late, enjoy the warm weather, spend time with friends and family, and relax outdoors. It’s often associated with celebration, light, and a sense of freedom that comes with extended daylight.
However, for those experiencing homelessness, the solstice can carry a very different meaning. The “longest day” can also mean prolonged exposure to the elements, limited access to shade, water, or safe spaces, and more hours spent navigating uncertainty and vulnerability. What feels like extra time to enjoy for some can feel like an extended period of hardship for others.
There are simple ways to help during the summer months: donate bottles of water, sunscreen, and hygiene supplies; support local shelters and outreach programs; volunteer your time; or check in on people in your community who may need assistance. Even small acts of care can make a meaningful difference during the hottest and longest days of the year.
