A fabric womb made by Angélique du Coudray, a French midwife who was commissioned by King Louis XV to reduce infant mortality. From 1760 to 1783, she traveled all over France, visiting poor rural women and sharing her extensive knowledge with them. It is estimated that she trained some 10,000 women.
Du Coudray also invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin, for practicing mock births, and published a well-received midwifery textbook

“When my daughter and son in law first mentioned the idea of a home birth, I was surprised and a bit fearful. After much discussion and meeting the midwifery group of phenomenal woman, I did some research.
Many studies show that giving birth at home with a skilled midwife is equally as safe to giving birth in a hospital, in terms of outcomes for babies and moms.
It was not planned that I be at my grandsons birth, but I was. The experience was so natural, peaceful, comforting, personal, and amazingly beautiful as compared to a sterile hospital with doctors and nurses you may not know at all.
Every human should have the right and the means to choose how they wish to bring another human into the world. For this reason I support Homebirth for All.”

Thank you for sharing Lisa!

Some reasons families choose to birth at home include:

> A trusting relationship with their midwife
> Less pressure, more choices
> The comfort of familiar surroundings
> The desire to avoid unnecessary medical interventions
> Continuity of care and knowing who will attend their birth
> Cultural or religious considerations
> Dissatisfaction with previous hospital experiences
> Postpartum care for their body, heart, and mind

Homebirth isn't right for everyone, but it can be an empowering option that leads to a peaceful, joyful, and rewarding experience for most low-risk pregnancies. What made you choose to have a homebirth?

Homebirth offers birthing parents compassionate prenatal care, a safe and respectful birth environment, and postpartum support that the current medical system often fails to provide.

Despite the desire to birth at home, many families opt for hospital or birth center births because of cost. Homebirth for All exists to help more birthing parents in Massachusetts afford homebirth.

I will be forever grateful that my husband asked me what my birth plan was before we were even married or had kids. I had NO idea that we could chose where we had our babies. I thought everyone had babies in the hospital. Flash forward a year or 2 later, I get pregnant and I immediately start researching Home birth. Well it didn’t take me long to decide I was doing it at home, especially after watching The Business of Being Born and learning about the hospital birth statistics in America. I knew this is how I wanted to bring my baby into the world…in a warm tub while I breathed in lavender essential oils. I wish! Two home births later, that’s not how they turned out but at least I had the option to plan it that way. My first birth was very long but I never once feared that things were going wrong, thanks to my amazing midwifery team. I laborer for almost 48 hours before my daughter came out on a birth stool while listening to 50 Cent. Her heart rate never dropped during the entire time and there was no concern for transfer. Turns out she had a very short cord, making it hard for her to make her way into the world, she ran out of rope. I hemorrhaged a bit but again, my team took amazing care of me and I never once feared anything was going wrong. Second baby was quite different, 12 hour, standard labor but he did come out in the tub! The postpartum visits from my midwife was what made me chose home birth the second time around. I found that to be the best thing about home birth, the amazing care you receive after giving birth and you never have to leave your home!

We paid $5000-$6000 per birth and it was worth every single penny. Insurance didn’t cover a thing and I am honestly not surprised by that at all.

I believe in the mission because everyone should have a right to birth a child at home and money shouldn’t be a restriction. I also think that the organization will naturally open peoples minds to the idea of home birth where they might have never heard of it before, like me.

Whether you chose a home birth or hospital birth, make sure you do your own research and know that you can have a birth plan with the expectation that it might not go as planned. But at least you can feel empowered along the way!

Meet Laurelle!

Laurelle Farrell is a wedding and portrait photographer behind AR Images in Central MA. She also provides photographic and strategic social marketing and web solutions for various small businesses locally and across the country.

Laurelle switched to a homebirth at 37 weeks during the beginning of the COVID pandemic. At this time interventions and a lack of choices were extreme, however Laurelle believes that we should all be able to make comfortable personal decisions throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. Having experienced multiple providers before a midwife she experienced how truly superior the care and access to support was. Laurelle joined the board to help spread knowledge of the options moms truly have.

When she isn’t chasing her toddler around she can usually be found snuggled up in fuzzy socks with a good book, or enjoying her favorite ice cream.

The home birth rate in Massachusetts rose 47% since the pandemic began according to a new CDC report.

A 2020 article by Parents says "Today in the U.S. only about 1 percent of babies are born at home each year. The reasons as to why this statistic is so low are many, but cost is often listed as a primary barrier."

What factors do you think has contributed to more families choosing homebirth?

Meet Jodi!

"Giving birth was a life changing experience for me and was ultimately what made me decide to get involved in pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding as a career. I feel compelled to educate women on the options and choices they have for their births to try and make each and every experience the very best it can be. I know how important the postpartum time is and my priority is to support new moms to the fullest capacity.

You could say that I am obsessed with all things birth, moms and babies! I love to learn and strive for expertise in my field. I am a trained Labor Doula and Childbirth Educator as well as a certified Lactation Educator and Postpartum Doula. I am also a member of the CAPPA Faculty as the Postpartum Doula and Lactation Educator Trainer for New England. I recently took a New Parent Educator and an Advanced Multiples Training. In addition to that, I am also a Certified Health and Wellness Coach specializing in prenatal and postpartum women."
