RIP 😢 Our community mourns the loss of a true local hero and dedicated advocate, Master Sergeant Paul Welby of West Scranton, who passed away on August 21, 2026, at the age of 43 following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
🇺🇸 Paul proudly served his country for 19 years in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, completing deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Spartan Shield, and earning numerous honors including the Meritorious Service Medal and the PA Major Octavius V. Catto Medal.
🇺🇸 Beyond his distinguished military service, Paul’s heart truly belonged to his community and his fellow service members. As President of Fight4Vets Inc., a board member of the NEPA Armed Forces Day Parade Committee, and an active presence with organizations like American Legion Post 328 and the VFW, he spent his life lifting others up putting the needs of veterans and their families first. When he faced his diagnosis, the community rallied around him through local fundraisers and support initiatives, mirroring the relentless dedication he always showed to others.
🇺🇸 Above all, Paul was a devoted husband, incredible son, a proud father to Jaxon and Elaina, and a loving presence to his family and many dear friends.
For those wishing to honor his incredible legacy, memorial contributions may be made to Fight4Vets Inc. (711 Davis Street, Scranton, PA 18505).
Thank you for your service, your leadership, and your endless heart, Paul. Rest in peace. 💙🇺🇸 Scranton Strong ❤️
