Goshen Arts Council

Goshen Arts Council The Goshen Arts Council is the collective voice for the arts, advancing the City of Goshen by improving quality of place.

In the fall of 2016, Mayor Jeremy Stutsman assembled a team of 12 local artists and patrons of the arts to form Goshen’s first-ever Mayor’s Arts Council. The council has continued to grow since then and has turned its focus to gaining an Arts and Culture District designation from the Indiana Arts Commission. Goshen Arts Council’s mission is to support Goshen artists and creatives by connecting the

m with resources, promoting them to a regional audience, and providing city support for local arts events and initiatives. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goshenartscouncil/

"I comb through all those photographs looking for a set of three that strikes me as interesting, that bring out some aspect of the subject I wasn't conscious of before. That's part of the exploration. So I work from photographs as source material, partly because some hand gestures would be virtually impossible for someone to hold for very long.

I have a retirement exhibit coming up in the middle of January, so I'm trying to complete one more series in advance of that. I don't want to say much more about that because I don't know if that will work!

It's called "Inside Voices," and it will be at the Hershberger [Art Gallery in the lobby of Goshen College Music Center] on January 22 through mid-March."

"I have a sculpture in downtown Elkhart outside of Secret Door Games as part of the Epic Art Adventures exhibit, the Seward Johnson exhibit. It's a ten-and-a-half-foot sculpture, wood and steel, so that is the most public piece of art I have right now.

It's exciting because you can just walk up to it and look at it. Any time of day! It's not in a museum. It's always there. It will be there through the end of April."

"I think Goshen puts a lot of emphasis on social, artistic interaction. Growing up here, I was surrounded by artists supported by the community, making it seem like a very admired profession. That made me optimistic. I wanted to stay involved in art.

That social interaction - stimulated by the city and the community - is important to me. I’m not majoring in art, but I have multiple opportunities to sell my work, and again, this makes me feel supported by the community. I don’t think I would feel anywhere else."

"One of the things I love about choir – and it’s different from any other music situation – is that you’re making music with your body. You can’t trade in your instrument and get a better one. You learn to use what you’ve got, and you carry it with you wherever you go.

We don’t have a ‘bench,’ so everybody will be a part of this experience and use their own selves to do that. I think that’s a really beautiful and powerful thing."

"A pivotal moment in my life as an artist was coming to college. I'd always considered making art a hobby before, primarily because I was surrounded by people who told me making art would never be a sustainable career path. But since coming here, I've been presented with several opportunities to show and sell my art. It's really affirmed my artistry and boosted my self-confidence to see that the work I create is appreciated and that people are willing to pay for it."

"I think henna’s something unique. It’s one of those arts from so many different cultures that has so many different styles. People typically think of it as only Indian, but there are Arabic and Turkish styles, too, like my friend’s from Morocco. The Coptic Jews in Egypt [had their own]. I love to bring all of those into the art that I’m doing.

It might be a different motif or another subject, but I can tie these elements into what I’m doing now. I love when people say, ‘Just do whatever you want!’ And I can incorporate these elements in one design instead of somebody getting something off Pinterest and bringing it to me."
