We’ve had a busy and impactful couple of months at NEI-AHEC!

From collaborating with incredible interprofessional groups to engaging students in hands-on learning experiences, it’s been exciting to see future healthcare professionals grow, connect, and serve our communities.

Highlights include working with the FWAIPEC (Fort Wayne Area Interprofessional Education Consortium) events, hosting a surgical suturing session with Goshen College’s Pre-Health Club, and facilitating discussions on the Cycle of Addiction with IU IPE. We’ve also had the opportunity to support a powerful poverty simulation with Purdue Extension.

Grateful for all the partners, students, and communities who continue to make this work meaningful. More to come!

November Scholars Highlight!

The AHEC Scholars Program is a state-wide scholarship that aims to improve health outcomes by providing comprehensive education to healthcare students and preparing them to serve rural and underserved populations.

StaShanna Thomas-Morrish is from Fort Wayne, IN, and graduated from Snider High School. She attends Indiana
University of Fort Wayne, pursuing a master's in social work.

"I chose social work because I enjoy being resourceful and providing comfort to those in need and who may need an extra supportive person. Social work isn’t just about resource management or helping the underserved, but bridging the gap and ensuring equality for all".

Her favorite aspect of AHEC is the focus on intercollaborative and interprofessional practice. Healthcare is not just a one-sided system, and working effectively as a team plays a vital role in the well-being of the patient.

"My favorite part of the program was the NOA conference, it was a fulfilling learning experience, and I would encourage other students to attend if given the opportunity".

We appreciate our scholars and all the work they do🧡

What an amazing day at Goshen College!

We had the privilege of joining high school students at Goshen College to explore opportunities in nursing and public health. Our team facilitated two hands-on activities: geriatric simulation and surgical suturing, giving students a chance to experience real-world healthcare skills in a supportive and interactive environment.

A huge thank you to everyone who organized the day and all the students who participated. You brought energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm that made the day unforgettable!

We can’t wait to see some of you pursuing careers in healthcare soon!

October Scholar Highlight!

The AHEC Scholars Program is a state-wide scholarship that aims to improve health outcomes by providing comprehensive education to healthcare students and preparing them to serve rural and underserved populations.

Meet Julia Schroeder from Fort Wayne, Indiana! Julia is finishing her BSN at the University of Saint Francis and will graduate in December 2025.

"I love nursing - I love getting to know the patients I take care of, to learn their personal background, and to treat all their needs. I am so excited to be a nurse, and I look forward to being the change I seek in healthcare. I also look forward to using the talents God gave me to treat my patients with respect, kindness and to be a light during their time of some darkness. The AHEC scholars program has been a perfect resource in learning how to do this best!! I am especially interested in the geriatric population, and AHEC has provided me with great education and experience in caring for vulnerable populations. I am so excited to take what I know and bring it with me throughout my nursing career!"

Outside of nursing, Julia treasures her family, friends, and faith, which continue to guide her in all she does.

💛 We are so proud to highlight Julia this month!
