Today, we gather as a community—young and old, veterans and civilians, families and friends—to honor the sacred memory of those who gave their lives in service to this nation. Memorial Day is not just a holiday; it is a solemn reminder of the cost of our freedom.
We were deeply honored to hear from Major Robert Snyder, U.S. Army Special Forces (Retired), who spoke with conviction and clarity about what this day truly means. He reminded us that behind every flag, every headstone, and every moment of silence lies a name—a life—a story of courage and sacrifice.
Major Snyder walked us through the long history of our nation’s wars—from the Revolution to today—and spoke the names of battles not just as history, but as lived sacrifice. He recounted the story of a Blackhawk pilot lost in the Battle of Mogadishu, a vivid reminder that not all heroes fall in wars we remember well, but all deserve to be remembered.
And right here, in our own hometown of Gorham, we remember Staff Sergeant Kenneth Ellis, U.S. Army—one of our own, who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War. His name is etched in our hearts and on the stones of Eastern Cemetery, a place that stands as hallowed ground for generations of Gorham’s fallen.
Let us never forget: Memorial Day is not about celebration—it is about remembrance. It is about the young lives cut short, the families left behind, and the burden carried by those who return.
So today, and every day, may we carry the legacy of our fallen heroes forward—not only in words, but in the way we live, the way we serve, and the way we remember.
