Deaf or hard-of-hearing patients might be asked to sign a waiver if they decline to use a sign language interpreter but this does not mean they can use an unlicensed interpreter, friend, or family member.

The provider has the right to still bring in an interpreter for their own communication needs with the deaf or hard-of-hearing patient.

Remember, interpreters serve all parties involved.
