Santa Barbara Hackerspace Inc.

Santa Barbara Hackerspace Inc. SB Hackerspace is a fun place to make interesting things with smart people. Our activities range from robotics, to sewing and everything in between.

The Santa Barbara Hackerspace was founded in 2009. We started out in a garage and after nearly a year we upgraded to our first office. It was 450 square feet and though it started empty we filled it quickly. At the time we had only 5 contributing members and barely managed to get by there. After a year there we had gathered a large enough following to justify moving to a larger unit. We moved to a

nother unit that was about 200 square feet. After just a month membership swelled and it was time to upgrade again. We rented a second 2000 sure foot unit and made that a machine shop. With the added space we changed our model a bit and decided that in addition to supporting members of the community we would also become an incubator for small businesses. We currently have 5 co-working offices housing 4 start-ups who regularly utilize our space and equipment to develop their businesses and products. To sum up, we are a group of makers and software developers in the Santa Barbara community who love coming together to build things. We are a non-profit organization, and we rely on the membership dues, and donations of enthusiastic technologists to keep going. Interested in becoming a member? Support the Santa Barbara Hackerspace – Your Impact Just Doubled!

We’re thrilled to share that thanks to our incredible community, we’ve already raised over $40,000 in support of the Santa Barbara Hackerspace! Your generosity is helping us maintain and grow a vital hub for creativity, engineering, and hands-on learning in the heart of Santa Barbara.

And now, we have some exciting news: an anonymous donor has pledged to match every donation made this week – dollar for dollar!

That means every $1 you contribute becomes $2 to help fund our move, tools, expand workshops, and keep our space accessible to makers of all ages.

One week only. Double your impact.
Help us reach the next level – whether you’re a past member, a curious supporter, or just love what we’re building, now is the time to give.

Please share this with everyone your network – friends, family, coworkers – anyone who believes in supporting community, creativity, and education.

Thank you for keeping the spirit of innovation alive in Santa Barbara!

The Santa Barbara Hackerspace has been a community hub for makers, tinkerers, and tech enthusiasts since its founding. Unfortunately, our previous building was sold, and the new landlords proposed an unsustainable 70% rent increase. We had to leave.

Hey everyone we have an exciting announcement to make!!!

The Santa Barbara Hackerspace has secured a new location!!!!

We signed a lease for 302 Pine Ave, Goleta CA 93117.

Securing this space has been a ton of work but this new space will represent a huge step up for us.

This move wouldn’t be possible without our members and we are incredibly excited for the opportunity to build out a new space better suited to our needs. Special thanks to , and Kerr for putting an insane amount of work (and for all the work that will be required to build out and move the space)

Come join us for our Augsust tech talk: Incubating the Goleta/Santa Barbara microchip industry presented by Dr. Demis John.

Microchips are the world’s most advanced technology in the world. And Goleta & Santa Barbara are home to some of the most innovative microchip companies in the world. In this talk I will give an introduction to the local microchip industry, and explain how anybody can make microchips with a bit of imagination.

Demis John graduated with his Ph.D. in 2012 from the research group of Dr. Daniel J. Blumenthal at UCSB. He worked on creating ultra-low-loss optical waveguides, in close collaboration with the John E. Bowers research group, involving a great deal of materials analysis and fabrication along with optoelectronic simulation. From 2012 to 2017, Demis worked at Praevium Research Inc. where he developed near-infrared and mid-infrared tunable semiconductor lasers for medical imaging and gas spectroscopy, respectively. Combined, Demis has been using the UCSB Nanofab since 2006.

Demis has also worked with the Santa Barbara City College to build Santa Barbara’s first semiconductor cleanroom training for non-UCSB students, using a UCSB Cleanroom. He also launched the manufacturing and technology committee within the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce, with the intention of building the visibility of Santa Barbara‘s cutting edge microchip industry so local residents can be part of this amazing industry. The above efforts resulted in Demis being awarded Goleta finest innovator in 2023.
