🐾⚓ MEET CRICKET — TAKING APPLICATIONS! ⚓🐾
If you looked at Cricket today—running across the yard, playing with toys, giving kisses and showing off that ridiculously adorable underbite—you probably wouldn’t believe how her story began. ❤️
When Cricket arrived, she couldn’t properly use all four of her limbs.
But apparently nobody told Cricket she wasn’t supposed to run again.
Within a week, she was using her front legs.
Around 10 days later, she was using all four.
And by approximately two weeks?
Cricket was running. ❤️
Today, this approximately 5-year-old Maltese mix is one of the happiest, funniest little characters you could meet.
We lovingly refer to her as our Falcor lookalike, and once you see it, you can never unsee it. 😂
Cricket loves kisses, cuddling, toys, playing, running around and being with her people. When she walks slowly, she moves her legs independently. But when she gets excited and picks up sp*ed, those back legs kick into an adorable little bunny hop.
Cricket’s recovery has been remarkable, but there is an important reality her future family needs to understand.
Cricket is a significant medical case.
Her imaging revealed congenital spinal deformities and extensive orthopedic abnormalities. Multiple thoracic disc spaces from approximately T1–T11 are wedged, her L4 vertebra is severely misshapen with an incomplete fracture involving the canal portion, and she has abnormalities involving the bones of her left front leg and paw along with evidence of a previous radius/ulna fracture.
In plain English, Cricket’s body has been through a LOT.
The fact that she can walk and run today does not mean those underlying problems have disappeared.
Her mobility could change as she gets older. There is a possibility that someday she could require additional medication, rehabilitation, mobility assistance or even a wheelchair.
And whoever adopts Cricket needs to be willing to love that Cricket, too. ❤️
Cricket is also extremely frightened by storms, fireworks, loud bangs, loud vehicles and similar noises. When frightened, her instinct can be to escape, so her future family will need to take her noise phobia seriously and provide a secure environment where she cannot hurt herself trying to get away.
She is also dog selective.
Cricket has successfully lived and played with other dogs, but she has also unexpectedly decided she no longer tolerated dogs she had previously been friendly with. Because of that unpredictability, we are very cautious about canine companions.
Ideally, Cricket would thrive in a quiet, low-key home where she can simply be someone’s companion.
She may potentially live with one carefully selected, calm and respectful dog around her size or slightly larger, but she should not live with small dogs or young, hyper, rough-playing dogs that could jump on her, body-slam her or injure her spine.
We aren't looking for the first person willing to adopt Cricket.
We're looking for the right person.
Someone who understands that adopting a medical dog means making a promise without knowing exactly what the future will bring.
Today she runs.
Today she plays.
Today she is mobile, happy and completely determined to squeeze every ounce of joy out of life.
Maybe she’ll remain that way for years.
We certainly hope so.
But the person who takes Cricket home needs to be willing to stay if someday those four little legs can't carry her the way they do today.
Because Cricket doesn't just need someone willing to love the dog she is now.
She needs someone willing to love the dog she may become. ❤️
