IN TRIBUTE To the BSA DECISION TODAY that WILL ALLOW FEMALES TO JOIN SCOUTING:
The 1981-83 Philmont Rangers were under the leadership of Chief Ranger Joyce Schroeder from State College, PA. The selection of a female at this time is an important statement by Philmont and the BSA in respect to her leadership abilities. Working on the Philmont Ranger history project, her final reports were very detailed and well written.
Joyce served as Chief Ranger for three years (1981-1983), was Associate Chief Ranger from 1979-1980, Training Ranger in 1978, and a Ranger in 1977.
She was introduced to Philmont by her brother Gary (Ranger 1974, TR 1975-6, CD 1977), which prompted her to sign up for the 1975 Kit Carson Women program. However, she received a letter from registrar Betty Brown that the trek had been cancelled due to the fact that she was the only person who applied. Not deterred, Joyce participated on a Rayado Trek in 1976.
Joyce pursed careers in science and medicine and in recent years served as a Cardiothoracic Radiologist at National Jewish Health in Denver, CO specializing in the imaging of chronic lung disease, lung cancer, and cardiac disease with CT, PET/CT and MRI. Her research interests include quantitative imaging of lung parenchyma, advanced visualization, and radiation dose reduction.
Her education includes B.S. Electrical Engineering (Penn State), M.S. Geophysics (Stanford), M.S. Computer Science (Stanford), M.D. and Radiology Residency (Univ. of Colorado), and Radiology Fellowship (Stanford).
Her extended family of Philmont Rangers also includes Glenn Schroeder (Ranger 1981, TR 1982), Lisa Schroeder Lucas (Ranger 1985-6, TR 1987-8) and Mark Lucas (Ranger 1987, TR 1988). Her son Alex Honeyman and nephews Zach, Quintin and Wyatt Schroeder have all been on Philmont treks.
