Announcing a new program the Women’s Committee is starting this fall - Field Trip? It’s in the bag!

Attention Wayne County Teachers! We’re introducing a new program providing ag-accurate lesson plans for teachers, including materials needed for activities, an NC Ag Mag, a book with lesson guide, and other fun materials related to the subject commodity. For our first go-round we chose strawberries, pumpkins, sweetpotatoes, and turkeys. Our Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair booth this year is highlighting this program and other resources for teachers interested in ag literacy.

Agriculture is built on generations, knowledge passed down, hands learning from hands, and families rooted in the land. National Farm Safety & Health Week reminds us that protecting those generations is part of preserving the future of farming.

What generational safety looks like:

Teaching youth safe equipment habits: Modeling slow, deliberate movement around machinery.

Passing down PPE practices: Gloves, hearing protection, respirators, and sun safety.

Sharing mental health awareness: Stress and fatigue affect every age group.

Creating safe farm spaces: Clear pathways, locked chemical storage, and designated play areas.

Honoring elders’ experience: Their stories often contain the safety lessons that protect the next generation.

Farm families are the backbone of rural communities. When we invest in safety, we invest in the next generation of growers, caretakers, and stewards of the land.

Last Friday our Young Farmer & Rancher Committee was excited to host other young farmers from Duplin, Johnston, Lenoir, and Pamilco counties on a farm tour of Contentnea Farms and PhyllaTech. Thanks so much for showing us around!

Sun safety is important all year long, but especially this time of year! Farmers are 60% more likely to develop skin cancer and make up 33% of all basal cell carcinoma patients. At our meeting Tuesday night board members got some tools to help combat this.

NC Farm Bureau is committed to helping its members minimize farm hazards through education and proactive programs. Ag literacy is an important part of our mission and this is one way we accomplish it. Our Women’s Leadership Committee donates ag-accurate books to 19 1st Grades in Wayne County schools every spring!
