HAPPY SUNDAY 📚🤍...

Yesterday Coach Casey contacted me in a panic as she had one of her star players, a GHS '25 Senior 🎓💙💛, who was completely lost on how to start their college application process. Nothing completed yet, no plan/idea, no list of schools, and a common misunderstanding that counselors, coaches, or teachers would take care of everything for them. They had no idea how much effort, time, and intricate info go into just the beginning of this journey. ⏳

This moment resparked an old flame🕯️So we asked their teammates if they had started the process, we realized they hadn't either! It’s moments like these that remind me why I R.ise A.bove was founded in the first place. 🌱

Parents are overwhelmed, counselors are stretched thin, and students—without the right guidance—can get lost in the maze of applications, deadlines, and opportunities. But these kids can only go as far as we help them go. There are countless opportunities waiting to be received, but they won't be if you don’t take the first step! 🫵🏼

If you know a student or parent struggling with where to begin, reach out! There’s no shame in asking for help—it’s only a setback if you don’t. Let’s make sure they’re equipped to chase their dreams and RISE ABOVE. 🫂🩵

ATTENTION GHS PARENTS & STUDENTS;

Beginning today, October 19, 2020 through October 30, 2020 seniors aspiring to attend college in North Carolina can apply for FREE! Traditionally known as "College Application Week" that's only one week, this year CFNC extended this beneficial process to TWO weeks for high school seniors!

That being said, parents tell your Cougar and Cougars tell your classmates to meet with I R.ise A.bove this week and next week to have their applications proofed, polished, and ensured for quality submission purposes! Any questions or concerns please contact me directly! All students should take advantage of this two week period of waived college application fees!

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

Attention Facebook, the President of the Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro has reached out to I Rise Above seeking volunteers to assist with grooming the train area at Herman Park in preparation for the holiday train-ride season. They will provide gloves and the tools needed to get the gardening and cleaning done. The day of service will be this Saturday, October 10, 2020: 12 o'clock noon at Herman Park.

As an incentive and thank you for your assistance they will be providing pizza, drinks, and community service hours which is great for building your resumes for college applications! There will be more service hour opportunities with the Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro as the season continues, with volunteering at the train, the concession stand and keeping the park clean. If this is something you or someone you know may be interested in, please let me know by tomorrow Friday October 9, 2020 at 6pm via email ([email protected]) or inbox I.R.A. directly here on facebook!
If necessary I can provide transportation to those who need it.

The The Housing Authority of the City of Goldsboro Scholarship application is now open! Read below for further information:

Scholarships will be granted to public housing residents of the Housing Authority of the City of Goldsboro who apply
and meet the criteria as outlined. Up to $3000.00 will be awarded to the college or university which the applicant has been accepted. All funds will be utilized for educational purposes only.

Program Guidelines & Priorities:
* Applicant must be a resident of the Housing Authority of the City of Goldsboro.
* Applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent with a record of volunteerism in the community.
* Applicant must be enrolled at a college or university of their choice.
* Applicants must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
* Applicants must complete an essay about their career goals and how being awarded this scholarship will help you
achieve them.
* Applicant must include a letter of reference.
* Applicant must include proof of acceptance and grade point average.
* Deadline for all required documentation/completed applications is April 1, 2021

As October 1st approaches, time is winding down to begin figuring out what our Cougars desire to do as they prepare to leave the Cougar den! That being said, we have formulated a short entrance questionnaire to get to know our students! Please forward this link to any students at GHS, ALL GRADE LEVELS, have them sign in with their WCPS email to complete it. This is only a segway into what the rest of the semester holds!
It's not about where you come from, it's about where you're going so let's go together!

This form will allow IRA to learn more about it's students, where they come from, their career goals, and what areas of study they may want to pursue. Please provide as much detail as you desire, the more we learn about you the better we can navigate your path to success together!
