Hope for Youth, Wayne County, stands with the families, students, educators, and community of Minneapolis following today’s horrific shooting at Annunciation Catholic School. Two children’s lives have been stolen, and countless others are traumatized. We are heartbroken — and we are outraged.
Year after year, we are forced to watch our children march back into schools overshadowed by the fear of violence. How many classrooms must be shattered? How many families must mourn? Our youth deserve more than prayers offered after the fact — they deserve action before the next tragedy occurs.
We condemn this and every act of violence against children. Enough is enough. As a nation, we must summon the will to confront the root causes of these shootings — from access to deadly weapons to the neglect of mental health and community supports. Until we do, our silence and inaction make us complicit.
Hope for Youth will continue our mission to foster hope and create safe and nurturing spaces here in Wayne County, but we add our voice to the national call: our leaders must act with urgency, courage, and accountability. The lives of our children depend on it.
