Scouting America -Tuscarora Council Be sure to visit www.BEASCOUT.org to find the nearest scout unit! Several camps were used by the council during its history. Olive.

In 1923, the Goldsboro Rotary Club and a group of citizens in Smithfield and Kinston started what would eventually become the Tuscarora Council of the Boy Scouts of America. During that time, the organization served 474 boys through 24 troops in Duplin, Greene, Wayne, Johnston, and Lenoir counties. One of the early camps at Holt’s Lake (near Smithfield) was so remote that campers and guests had to reach the site by canoe. From 1929 to 1972, the Scouts used the Eagle’s Nest Camp near Mt. Camp Tuscarora, our current camp in Four Oaks, was opened in 1973. The Council and Scouting have grown significantly since their founding days. Today, the Tuscarora Council serves more than 3,000 youth and adult volunteers in Duplin, Johnston, Sampson, and Wayne counties of eastern North Carolina. The East Carolina Council now serves Greene and Lenoir counties. Several of the original troops from 1923 are still in existence, including Troop 7, now sponsored by Daniels United Methodist Church, and Troop 8, sponsored by New Hope United Methodist Church.

🦫 **Who Deserves to Be Recognized? Nominate Someone for the Silver Beaver Award!** 🦅

Behind every successful Scouting program are dedicated volunteers who give their time, talents, and hearts to making a difference in the lives of young people. ❤️

The **Silver Beaver Award** is the highest recognition a local council can bestow upon a volunteer for distinguished service to youth through Scouting.

Do you know someone who goes above and beyond? Someone who is always there to lend a hand, mentor a Scout, support fellow volunteers, strengthen their unit, or help make Scouting a life-changing experience for young people?

🌟 **Now is the time to recognize their impact!**

Consider nominating a deserving Scouting volunteer who:
🔹 Has made a lasting difference in the lives of youth.
🔹 Consistently serves their unit, district, or council.
🔹 Inspires and supports other volunteers.
🔹 Exemplifies the values and spirit of Scouting.
🔹 Gives selflessly to ensure future generations have the opportunity to benefit from Scouting.

🏅 **Don't let their dedication go unrecognized!** The Silver Beaver Award is an opportunity to say *thank you* to someone whose service has made a lasting impact on our Scouting community.

Think of the volunteers who have helped shape your Scouting journey or made a difference in the lives of the Scouts you serve. They may be the perfect candidate!

Please be sure to read the advisory

Scouting America issued a safeguarding advisory, dated October 6, 2026, about how offenders can misuse publicly available social media content featuring young people to identify and contact them online.

The advisory is meant to raise awareness, not alarm, and it is not meant to discourage anyone from sharing Scouting experiences. It offers practical steps for units, councils, camps, and social media administrators, such as limiting identifying details in posts and knowing how to report concerns. It also offers guidance for parents and Scouts, plus clear steps and trusted resources if a young person has been targeted.

Every Scout leader, volunteer, and parent should read the full advisory from Scouting America's Safeguarding Youth office. The link is in the comment section.
