"My brother called me from a gas station in Nevada at 2:00 AM and said he needed me to come get him and his dog and I want to tell you what happened when I did, because I think most people would have handled that phone call differently and I am still not sure if I handled it right.

My brother Danny is thirty-four.

He’s been going through things I won’t spell out here because they’re his to carry, not mine. For the past couple years, we’ve had the kind of relationship that lives in missed calls and “I’ll check in later” texts that never get sent.

The dog’s name is Biscuit.

He’s a blue-grey pitbull. Big head, tired eyes, the kind of dog people cross the street to avoid without knowing a thing about him. But if you look close, really close, you see it — he’s gentle. Steady. The kind of loyal that doesn’t make noise about it.

I drove six hours through the night.

When I pulled into that gas station just after sunrise, Danny was sitting on the curb like he hadn’t moved in hours. Hoodie dirty, hands hanging loose, eyes somewhere far away. Biscuit was right there beside him, pressed up against his leg like he was holding him together.

Neither of them looked like they had slept.

Danny looked… worn down in a way that isn’t about sleep.

He didn’t say much when he got in the car.

Biscuit climbed into the back seat slow, like he was sore, then leaned forward and rested his chin between the front seats. Watching the road. Watching everything. Like he knew this ride mattered.

We drove for two hours in silence.

I had questions. A thousand of them. But I didn’t ask.

I figured getting him home mattered more than getting answers.

Then Danny finally said it.

“He never left.”

I glanced at Biscuit.

Danny kept looking out the window. “No matter how bad it got… he stayed.”

I nodded. “I can see that.”

He swallowed hard and said, “I don’t think I’d still be here without him.”

And that hit different.

We stopped for breakfast outside Barstow.

Danny ate everything on his plate. Every bite. I didn’t say anything, but I noticed. It felt like something important.

Biscuit stayed in the car, curled up, finally resting like maybe he could let his guard down for a minute.

We made it home that evening.

Danny’s in my guest room now.

I got him an appointment on Monday — took a few calls, some pushing — but we got it. I’ll drive him there. No questions, no pressure.

Biscuit? He’s claimed the spot at the foot of the bed.

Hasn’t moved much. Just watches. Always watching.

Last night I walked past the door and heard Danny talking to him.

Quiet. Soft.

The way we used to talk as kids when the lights were off and the world felt smaller and safer.

I didn’t interrupt.

Some things… you just let happen.

That dog stayed through everything.

Three years of it.

I needed six hours just to show up once.

I’m trying to be more like the pitbull.
