🍂 Autumn is trail race season.

Colorado’s high country is starting to put on its fall colors, and the trails are calling. Whether you’re training for an autumn race or simply looking to build your fitness, there’s plenty of reason to head uphill this time of year.

In Colorado Alpine Trail Runs, author Annalise Grueter shares what drew her to high-altitude trail running and how hiking and running at elevation can work together in your training.

Annalise is an award-winning journalist who reports for The Sopris Sun and writes weekly columns for the Aspen Daily News. She’ll also be running the Golden Leaf Half Marathon for the fifth time on September 26 and participating in several events at the Aspen Literary Festival September 24–27.

"When the opportunity came up to spend 24 hours on a trail crew hitch alongside my coworker Sarah Schuller from our Youth Programs team, I confidently thought, "How hard could a day of trail work be?"

Twenty-four hours later, I had my answer. Very hard. Painfully hard. "Why-does-every-muscle-in-my-body-exist?" hard. And I was only there for a day. The crew members I worked alongside spend months each summer doing this."

CMC Chief Communications Officer Ashley Hanlon recently got the opportunity to spend time working on South Texas Creek Trail #417 in Gunnison National Forest with our Stewardship Trail Crew. It was an eye-opening experience that left her with a deeper appreciation for everyone who helps keep Colorado's trails in working order.

"Every time I step onto a well-maintained trail now, I'll notice things I never noticed before. The drains. The stone structures. The carefully managed water flow.

Most importantly, I'll think of the dedicated crew members whose hard work makes it all possible. Most hikers will never know their names, but every hiker benefits from what they do."
