Happy Independence Day, Mount Lookout Daughters!

165 years ago today Goldenites began celebrating our city's oldest holiday, celebrating the birth of our nation by celebrating the birth of our city! It was on July 4, 1859, just 18 days after Golden was founded, that folks celebrated by laying the cornerstone of Golden's first building, the Boston Company store that existed where its marker at Parfet Park is today. What did they put inside? Company leader and Transcript founder George West later reminisced "its contents which we well remember being deposited there we believe on July 4th, '59, with all due ceremony. The list comprises a copper cent and two-cent of the mintage of 1858, a pair of scissors, a table fork, tea spoon, a steel bitt, an ox shoe, a mule shoe and a horse shoe." The cornerstone was one of the first if not the first ever laid in Colorado. The cornerstone was taken out after the Great Flood of 1896 knocked the building off its base and its contents were given to West. However, being more than likely laid by Masons (Golden later created lodge #1 of the Masonic order in Colorado), the cornerstone's precise location is known, being the northeast corner of the building which exact position is marked on historic insurance maps of Golden. If someday Golden ever wanted to re-lay the cornerstone of our town it's possible to patriotically do so!
