Superstition Mountain Astronomical League® 2023-2024 Schedule of Events

The Superstition Mountain Astronomical League is again very pleased to announce we are continuing public observing events ("star parties") for the 2023-2024 astronomical observing season. This will be our 14th year of proudly hosting these outreach events, the first being in 2010, counting an extended hiatus due to the pandemic. The club was founded in 2009.

Note that we now host all outreach events at the Lost Dutchman State Park in the late Fall, Winter and early Spring when we have our winter members available to participate with their telescopes.

The events listed in the attached schedule are open to the public, of course, for those that preregister.

Lost Dutchman State Park will be charging an event fee of $5.00/person. As long as everyone in a single car is registered for the event, there will not be an additional car fee ($10 per vehicle). In order to ensure safety and best guest experience in which everyone has maximum telescope time, starting in October, a pre-registration will be required for admission. It will be necessary to arrive during your allotted time slot. Register in advance via the Lost Dutchman State Park website:
https://azstateparks.com/lost-dutchman/events/star-party-lost-dutchman
( Scroll down the page and look for Register here to attend! )

To be kept informed of any unforeseen changes/cancellations, please join our public Notification group by visiting https://groups.io/g/SuperMtnAstro-Notify/join and submitting your email address.

Lastly, we have an email address to which you may respond with any questions/comments: [email protected] (below) and you can contact us at that address.

We look forward to seeing you, once again, under the stars.

Tentative Star Party Planning for the 2021-2022 Observing Season
Customarily, this time each year (~Sept. 1st) we advise the community of our plans for the upcoming observing season, 2021-2022. But this is no ordinary season, of course.
And, due to the vagaries, uncertainties and unpredictability of COVID-19 and its Delta variant, we will delay any public outreach events until the first quarter of 2022.

Now, although CDC data (New Cases, Deaths, Hospitalizations) suggest the pandemic has worsened due to the Delta variant, there are recent signs of "greenshoots", if you will, with the impending full FDA approval of more vaccines and possibly more vaccination acceptance as well as some slight improvement in the more recently reported statistics. We can't discount the possibility of the situation presenting some clarity by the new year.

So, we feel we need to anticipate further positive trends and developments over the next few months and while we may plan for the worst, we also want to be prepared for, if not the best, at least a better outcome.

The way we will do that is: (1) delay any events until February; (2) require masking by all visitors; and (3) require pre-registration of visitors in order to minimize any crowds (something we should be doing anyway).

Look for further details and instructions in late December/early January.

Finally, we hope to resume our normal schedule for hosting events in the 2022-2023 season

Meanwhile, thank you, stay hopeful, stay safe and please get fully vaccinated,
(After all, we are all best served when we serve each other.)

If there are any questions, please leave a reply.

From last night's star party at Lost Dutchman State Park

We had a great turnout at Lost Dutchman State Park on Saturday evening. The skies cleared a little later than predicted but the visitors were very interested in what we could show them and the bit of astronomy we could teach as well. By the end of the evening, we had 561 adults, 239 kids, 26 dogs an...
