About CCPLA

CCPLA’s Origin and Mission

The Curry Citizens for Public Land Access (CCPLA) is a family friendly non-profit organization. It was formed in 2015 by members of the community who hunt, camp and recreate in the public lands of the surrounding area and had an interest in agency decisions regarding roads and trails. Over the years its core mission has always remained the same:

► Work to

retain access to public lands for a wide variety of recreational uses. This is accomplished by actively participating in the planning and decision making processes by providing detailed public input to projects and planning initiatives.

► Doing our part by organizing workdays to perform clearing and maintenance activities on roads and trails and repair problem areas ensuring continued public access.

► Model and educate users on the responsible use of public lands and the problems that resource damage creates. CCPLA Funding Sources

CCPLA is a non-profit tax-exempt public benefit corporation (TIN 47-3716714). Annual memberships, which fund our administrative expenses, allow all other donations and grants to go into work on the ground. Over time, grants have helped us to supplement our personal equipment and get some saws, tools, and a trailer secure storage and transport to work sites. Below is a list of the various funding we have received since we began. We greatly appreciate and value the support of the community.

◆ Ongoing annual membership fees and donations from members and friends
◆ US Forest Service Resource Advisory Committees (RAC) Grant (supports field work fuel)
◆ Port of Gold Beach supports maintenance on Port-owned properties including:
▻ Rogue River access at Jim Hunt Bar
▻ Rogue River access at Orchard Bar
▻ Canfield road and ATV track
◆ Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) Grant supports maintaining river access to:
▻ Chetco River
▻ Sixes River
◆ Oregon Hunter's Association - supports field work
◆ Three Rivers Foundation Grant – safety and brushing equipment purchase
◆ Gold Beach Community Fund - partial funding for tool trailer purchase
◆ Nonprofits Insurance Alliance Group Grant – supports safety training and supplies

While we have no ongoing funding source for field operation expenses, we have used a mix of donations and grants to date and will continue to seek additional funding. Meet the Board

How You Can Support CCPLA

CCPLA is only successful because of labor, equipment and money donated by members and friends. If any of the following describes you, we encourage you to help us with our mission. Do you or your family:

🌲 Enjoy accessing forest roads and trails on foot, motorcycle, side-by-side, quad, bicycle or horseback?
🌲 Use the access roads to the forest or the river gravel bars for hunting, fishing or recreating in the outdoors?
🌲 Camp to encourage family time and disconnect from technology?
🌲 Cut firewood or get a permit to cut a Christmas tree from the forest?
🌲 Believe the National forest and other public lands should remain open and accessible for future generations to enjoy? If one or more of these statements describes you, here’s how you can help:

😃 Volunteer for “work days” – These are days where CCPLA volunteers meet at a determined location to clear trails and roads. This is a great activity for families with tasks suitable for everyone such as move brush, branches and logs off roads and out of ditches or culverts. It’s an opportunity for parents to spend time with their children in nature and have fun while building a work ethic and heart for community service.

😃 Become a Member – Whether you are able to volunteer for our work days or not, you can still play an important role by becoming a member. For just $20/year (or $25 for a family), you can help CCPLA achieve its mission. Please email CCPLA at [email protected] for a sign up form.

😃 Talk about CCPLA – Spreading the word about CCPLA’s work helps a lot. Many people don’t know about CCPLA. They may see the white CCPLA signs as they drive by or through roads maintained by CCPLA but they have no idea what those signs mean. You can help by telling others what you know, sharing CCPLA posts and pointing friends and family to our page. We would very much appreciate you spreading the word!

What a great day! CCPLA met with members of a local home school group at Frances Shrader Old Growth Trail. After a safety meeting and a great hike around the trail--led by FS Botanist Teresa Bird--we got to work. Kid power prevailed and we got the job done in what seemed like no time. Thanks to all who helped make this project such a great success.

Hey Friends!! The Curry County Fair Parade is this Saturday, July 29, and Curry Citizens for Public Land Access (CCPLA) will participate again this year! We’d like to invite and encourage anyone who appreciates access to public lands to join us in the parade. Everyone is welcome... kids too!

You can walk or ride whatever you've got, and pretty much anything goes, as long as it's safe and consistent with responsible use of public lands.

Help us make a strong statement about how important public access is to our community and while we're at it, let's show our appreciation to the firefighters who are here battling the . You can bring your own signs to show your support.

The parade starts at 11:00 am, but judging will happen around 10:30 am, so we all need to be lined up and ready by then. Look for a dozer, backhoe and trailers with the CCPLA logo. We are usually lined up somewhere along Airport Way, but never quite know where until we arrive. Look for Lori Hawkins to check in and get some candy and bracelets to share.

Please email Lori at [email protected] or give her a call at 5416987834 to let her know you’d like to participate.

The link in this post goes to the most recent Flat Fire EMERGENCY FIRE ROAD, TRAIL AND RIVER CLOSURE ORDER published yesterday, July 17, 2023.

Please read and share this document as it spells out the restricted areas and prohibited activities, which are in effect now through the end of October unless lifted sooner.

It is critical for the safety of firefighters, first responders, residents and visitors that we all comply with this order.

CCPLA is partnering this month with the US Forest Service and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on a project to help restore the meadow and elk habitat in the Potato Patch Meadow on the lower Rogue River.

Bring the family and come join us for a fun and informative day out in nature!

Here are the details (you can also print the attached image):

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 —
Learn about tree encroachment in prairies and meadows and do something about it! We will work to remove small trees from open meadow habitats using hand tools, w**d eaters with blades, and chainsaws (unfortunately only folks with chainsaw training from USFS can use saws, even if you are a logger!)

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 —
Saturday April 29, 2023 starting at 10:00 AM until you are done.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 —
Meet at junction of 3353 and 380 roads. Directions—Take Silver Creek road to the East, just north of Lobster Creek Bridge. Hang right at the first two junctions and proceed to the Lower Rogue Trailhead. At the trailhead, continue on the left spur to the meeting location. https://goo.gl/maps/pK7EL3s37r1UPM3fA (disregard that Google Directions say
“Agness”)

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 —
Water, lunch, boots, long sleeve shirts, pants, work gloves, eye protection, hearing protection. If you are chainsaw trained through the Forest Service (S212, first aid, recert): Saw, gas, bar oil, personal protective equipment, and saw kit. Weedeater with blades/masticating tool? Bring it and please clean it before arrival. Forest Service will provide: Loppers, Sandviks, and other assort-ed handtools.

In general, CCPLA plans work days to be the Saturday following each Thursday meeting. However, weather can interrupt the schedule from time-to-time. We’ll confirm dates via Facebook posts several days before each work day.

Additional ad hoc work days are planned as time and weather permit or when an urgent access issue arises. The type of work that can be accomplished can be impacted by fire restrictions which limit the use of gas-powered tools. But we can always accomplish a lot any time of year.

Here are the scheduled work days for 2023; please mark your calendars and join us!

January 14 – CCPLA conducted a Storm Damage Assessment.

This phase is scheduled to take place between February 13th through the 17th, and unrestricted traffic passage through the weekend.

Phase two will occur between Monday - Friday, beginning February 21th and estimated to be completed on March 24th. This phase consists of removing and replacing the nonfunctional infrastructure as well as some tree removal for safety. During this phase, traffic delay could take up to one hour, with passage occurring at the top of each hour.

**Emergency vehicles and school busses will be allowed passage upon arrival**

The overall purpose of this project is to remove the existing hazards and install new debris fall protection infrastructure.
