is the Southern Illinois arm of the National RC&D program. Begun as a federally funded project, supported by the USDA, RC&D councils are now supported by private donations, community grants, and partnership projects with State and Federal conservation agencies. Serving the lower 16 counties of Illinois, SRCD focuses on the areas of environmental conservation, education and improvement.

Good morning everyone! Please take a few minutes to complete this survey on restoring the historic airstrip at Giant City State Park. The Shawnee RC&D is in support of this effort. Currently the airstrip is in a state of degradation, with significant amounts of the invasive autumn olive. Our organization was lucky enough to get an inside look at the project. From our understanding, the airstrip would not require any resources to be diverted from the park. A volunteer-led group would use their resources to restore and maintain the airstrip. Plans for restoration would include brush removal from the strip, pollinator strip plantings, and the establishment of more campsites in the vicinity of the airstrip. If you're worried about noise pollution, don't fret! According to a study from University of Montana, recreational aviation activity does not cause a significant increase in the stress levels of wildlife. Recreational aircraft offer one of the lowest impact means of accessing the backcountry. In summary, restoration of the airstrip would offer habitat restoration and improvement, park facility improvement, and increases in tourism.
