Bathrooms will be open most weekdays between 8:30am and 5pm. Remember, no pets allowed on the trails. As an Illinois Nature Preserve our goal is to keep the land as healthy and native as possible. While your pet might not visibly harm the land, there is research to show that animals avoid areas where dogs have been. We want our native wildlife to have full access to every part of our property and not be stressed out by smells of our pets.

It has been warbler mania along the Mississippi Flyway for the last few weeks. These tiny insect eating birds are easy to hear but hard to see because they usually sit towards the tops of trees hiding in the foliage.

What do you know about ferns? Below are two fun facts:

Older Than Dinosaurs: Ferns have been on Earth for over 360 million years. They flourished long before flowering plants or dinosaurs even existed.

The Magic Invisible Seed: In the Middle Ages, people thought that because fern spores were invisible, the plant itself held a magical "fern seed." People actually believed that harvesting these seeds on Midsummer's Eve would make them invisible.

A day on the river (Ellis Bay to be exact) is precisely what our middle school campers needed. Thank you National Great Rivers Museum educators for teaching our kids how to safely kayak and giving them a really cool experience.
