As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we find ourselves reflecting - on where we started, where we are today, and where we still need to go as a community.

Nearly 50 years ago, The Family Counseling Center was founded because there was a need. A need for support. A need for compassion. A need for people to know they did not have to carry life's challenges alone.

That need still exists today.

The faces and struggles may look different than they did decades ago, but the importance of accessible, compassionate mental health care remains just as vital. Anxiety. Addiction. Grief. Trauma. Isolation. Family stress.

The weight people quietly carry every day.

As our community changes, we must continue to grow alongside it - meeting today's challenges with the same heart, purpose, and commitment that this organization was built on all those years ago.

Mental health matters every month of the year. Not just in May.

So as we close out this month, we ask you to remember a few simple things:

πŸ’œ Check on your people.
🩡 Help your neighbor.
🀍 Lead with kindness.

And take care of yourself, too.

You never truly know what someone else may be facing.

And if you are struggling - please know this... You do not have to go through it alone.

We are here for our community. And we always will be. ✨

As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, remember this:

You never truly know what someone may be carrying quietly.

Choose kindness.
Choose patience.
Choose connection.

A single conversation can offer hope. A single act of compassion can remind someone they matter.

Together, we can help create a community where mental health conversations are met with understanding instead of stigma - and where people feel safe asking for help when they need it most. 🩡

Mental health support doesn't always look big or dramatic.

Sometimes it looks like:
✨ Sitting with someone in silence
✨ Bringing over coffee
✨ Remembering an important appointment
✨ Offering a walk or a conversation
✨ Simply saying, β€œI’m here.”

Sometimes it's the small moments that matter most.

If you are struggling with your own mental health, please remember:
🫢 It’s okay to ask for help
🫢 It’s okay to rest
🫢 It’s okay to talk about what you’re carrying
🫢 Seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness

You do not have to navigate difficult moments alone. 🩡

This Mental Health Awareness Month, it's important to remember that not everyone who is struggling looks like they're struggling.

Some people continue going to work.
Some keep smiling.
Some keep saying, "I'm fine."

Mental health challenges are often invisible, which is why checking in matters so much. 🩡

Send the text, Make the call. Invite someone for coffee. Ask how they're really doing - and be willing to listen without judgement.

Sometimes people don't need advice. Sometimes they just need to know someone cares. 🫢

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we're focusing on something simple, but incredibly powerful: connection. 🩡

A text message.
A phone call.
A quick, "How are you really doing?"

Connection reminds people they are seen, valued, and not alone - and sometimes, that can make all the difference.

If someone in your life seems overwhelmed, withdrawn, exhausted, or not themselves - don't ignore it. Reach out. You don't need to have the perfect words - simply showing up matters more than you realize.

And if you are struggling, please know this - you deserve support, too.

πŸ“ž If you or someone you know needs immediate support:
β€’ Call or text 988 for the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline
β€’ Call 911 in an emergency
β€’ Call our Crisis Line at 518.725.4310 ext. 999
β€’ Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, counselor, or healthcare provider

You are never alone.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month 🩡

Older New Yorkers are a rapidly growing population across the state - and the data shows that mental health needs will continue to rise alongside it.

According to the NYS Office of Mental Health:

πŸ“Š Nearly 1 in 4 New Yorkers is age 60 or older
πŸ“Š The older adult population is expected to grow by 25% before 2040
πŸ“Š Mental health conditions among older adults are projected to increase by more than 50% by 2030

At the same time, mental health challenges in older adults are often under-identified, and stigma can delay or prevent care. Many older adults also seek support through primary care providers rather than mental health specialists, making integrated, culturally competent care essential.

The impact of access is clear: when older adults are connected to appropriate services, outcomes improve significantly across both mental and physical health measures - including depression, anxiety, substance use, blood pressure, and overall wellness.

These numbers tell a clear story: access, connection, and culturally responsive care are not optional - they are essential.

πŸ’™ This Mental Health Awareness Month, we are reminded that building systems that reflect the needs of older adults strengthens entire communities.

Mother's Day is a moment to celebrate the love, strength, and care that moms bring into our lives every single day. But it's also a gentle reminder that moms deserve care, too.

Maternal mental health matters - it's part of being able to show up the way you want to. Whether it's asking for help, taking a quiet moment to breathe, or simply acknowledging that some days are harder than others, it all counts.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms doing their best every day - we see you. πŸ’›
