🌎 VIRGINIA, ARE YOU READY TO SHAKE OUT? ⏰

On Thursday, October 15, at 10:15 a.m., Virginians are encouraged to participate in the 2026 Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill!

Whether you're at school, at work, or at home, take a few minutes to practice the actions that could help protect you during an earthquake.

🛑 DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON!

⬇️ DROP to your hands and knees before the shaking knocks you down.

🛡️ COVER your head and neck and, if possible, take shelter under a sturdy desk or table.

✊ HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops.

🏫 Schools, businesses, government agencies, and households across Virginia can participate. Some organizations may also test emergency notification systems during the drill, so be aware of any alerts you may receive.

🌪️ You don't have to live in an earthquake-prone area to be prepared. Practicing now helps build the muscle memory you may need in an emergency.

Virginia, let's make preparedness a habit! Participate in the Great ShakeOut and encourage your family, friends, and coworkers to join you.

A Tornado Watch has been issued for northeast North Carolina and southeast Virginia and is in effect until 8 PM EDT tonight. This WATCH means conditions are favorable for tornadoes, not that one is imminent. Know your shelter location, monitor updates, and be ready to act fast if a Warning is issued.

Tornado WATCH in effect until 8pm for Southside, the Peninsula and NE NC.

There's a line of storms (that have had tornado warnings) which are moving northeast at 30-35 mph. The timing has these now moving in at or after 4pm, but they could be strong for the cities inside the circle which includes Suffolk, Franklin, Wakefield, Murfreesboro, Ahoskie and surrounding communities.

ALSO, there is a chance that they could weaken some, so right now lets monitor then and see what they do.
