TownGreen Assisting greater Cape Ann in becoming an inclusive model of sustainability that is fossil fuel free and prepared for the impacts of climate change.

The Cape Ann region is experiencing stronger storms, summer droughts, and rising sea levels. These are the impacts of climate change. Climate change is here. It is happening. It is likely that the earth will warm past 1.5 degree Celsius, the identified threshold that would reduce the likelihood of the worst effects of climate change. New England and the Gulf of Maine are warming faster than any ot

her areas on the planet and that means Cape Ann is warming fast. What can we do? There are many actions that citizens of Cape Ann can take right now. This includes taking individual actions, supporting climate policies, and learning about how our climate is changing and what’s ahead so we can plan and be ready. TownGreen, Inc’s mission is to act as a catalyst in assisting the greater Cape Ann region in becoming a vibrant and inclusive model of sustainability that is fossil fuel free and prepared for the impacts of climate change. TownGreen is ready to serve Cape Ann by providing climate education to the public, businesses, and municipalities in formats that meet all of our needs. TownGreen is ready to work on meaningful climate policy in Massachusetts. And Towngreen is ready to bring fossil fuel free affordable options to Cape Ann to reduce our region’s reliance on oil and natural gas and move toward electrification. We can do this.

The fastest-warming U.S. states from 1970 to 2025 are: Alaska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Delaware, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Continued warming can harm people and ecosystems, but we have many options to accelerate the clean energy transition and cut heat-trapping pollution.

CALL FOR STORM MONITORS: Help document storm damage on Cape Ann.

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood watch for the Massachusetts coast in effect from Sunday morning, 2/1, through Monday morning. The combination of an 11 foot high tide and strong winds from a storm along the east coast may cause flooding of low lying locations. Road inundation is possible in some areas. High tides on Sunday and Monday will be between 10:30 and 11:30 AM.

If you are able to safely take photos of flooding and other coastal damage from this event please upload them to:
MyCoast: Massachusetts, StormReporter at https://mycoast.org/ma

The MyCoast app can also be download on your phone. The photos you take will be uploaded directly to the StormReporter database at MyCoast: Massachusetts.

Thanks and be safe!

On November 7th TownGreen asked Cape Ann residents to photograph the 2025 king tide. We had a resounding response and were able to capture water levels at shoreline locations around the cape. It was a calm and sunny day for the highest tide of the year so luckily flooding was minimal. What we accomplished as a community participatory science project was to establish a baseline record of king tide water levels at key locations that can be compared with future king tide levels which undoubtedly will be increasing as the effects of climate change accelerate in the coming decades. Visit the Massachusetts MyCoast website https://mycoast.org/ma/king-tides to view some of the many photos submitted. They range form Lobster and Goose Coves to Rockport Harbor, Gloucester Harbor and Blyman”s bridge to Manchester Harbor and the Essex River and many point in-between. We hope you join us next year as participants in this TownGeen King Tide Monitoring Project.

Additional high tide events happen in the fall and spring. There will be a higher than normal tide on December 4-6. If there are strong on-shore winds or storms coinciding with these higher tides considerable flooding and storm damage can occur. Please continue to document these events and submit your photos to the StormReporter database at Massachusetts MyCoast https://mycoast.org/ma/storm
