While human trafficking is a worldwide, multi-billion dollar issue, it is one that is also happening right here on our soil. And the truth is, it is a much bigger issue then many believe. The state of Nebraska had been slow to pick up the legislative fight against human trafficking; time and time again any significant legislation had been defeated. However, in the last three years, Nebraska has fi

nally been catching up. In the summer of 2012, LB1145 (which created the governor’s Human Trafficking Task Force) was passed and signed into law. In the summer of 2013, LB255 was passed; increasing penalties against pimps and those who solicit minors, and making human trafficking a form of child abuse. And most importantly, LB255 granted immunity to juveniles engaged in commercial s*x acts. Free The People Movement was formed in December 2011 in response to a legislative interim hearing on Human Trafficking in the state of Nebraska. Free The People Movement started as a small group of individuals just wanting to do something to help counter human trafficking in Nebraska. In March of 2012, Free The People Movement volunteered to begin preliminary research of possible stakeholders and gauge the needs in the state. Free The People Movement has since provided key information to the Governor’s Task Force legislated by NE LB1145, and input on several other strategic committees. Free The People Movement believes that by working together, we will see an end to human trafficking.
