They stole the plaque.
The plaque featured a 1925 Aldo Leopold quote praising livestock associations and hunting clubs for their leadership in advocating for the nation's first wilderness. It's the history here that we can't forget.

Waiting for a LEO report from Gila National Forest.

Leopold's wife's uncle was a sheepman in the Gila
Leopold became interested in the Gila in part through family and personal connections. The N-Bar Ranch been acquired by his wife Estella's uncle, Solomon Luna, one of the most successful sheepmen and most influential political figures in the territory of New Mexico. He used it as a base for his sheep-grazing operations .

Working together Frisco Cowbelles and San Francisco Soil and Water Conservation have placed a plaque at the Aldo Leopold Scenic Lookout South of Glenwood, NM. In 1924. there was a question whether to name the area National Hunting Grounds or Wilderness. Hunting groups and livestock associations supported Aldo Leopold in creating the Wilderness. Conservation meant putting up fences so wandering herds couldn't use another's range and ruin the soill. It was new science at the time. Herds in the 1880's in the Gila were 100,00. Leopold wanted deer to range ratio healthy for the environment.
