First HCPD Black officer?✔️
First HCPD female officer?✔️
First HCPD Black female CHIEF?✔️
Each year during Black History Month, the police department commemorates HCPD employees who have paved the way to help open doors and increase opportunities for Black members. That trailblazing has never been more evident than in our first Black female Police Chief Lisa Myers. Chief Myers is pictured here with retired-Lt. Herman Charity and retired-Sgt. Leila Makowski Hajek, who each broke race and gender barriers in the late-1960s by joining the ranks of the Howard County Police Department. We owe them a debt of gratitude for fearlessly paving the way for generations of minorities and women to come.

As women across the nation are breaking barriers and making history, we're excited to present the 'So She Did' campaign - an initiative designed to recognize greatness throughout our county. In lieu of our annual Women’s Hall of Fame, which has reached its conclusion with the 40th anniversary of the Commission for Women in 2020, this campaign will expand our goal of building political, social, and economic equality for all residents.

The commission is seeking profiles of residents who are promoting positive change through their professional work, volunteerism, or advocacy efforts in Howard County. Residents are encouraged to submit their showcase of the girls and women you know who are making a difference for the betterment of our community.
