No water? No Cheers!
And just think about how many times a day you need water before you can even make it to Happy Hour?!

invites us to see how crucial our need for water really is by visualizing life without it, just for one day. Very quickly, we learn how indispensable water is in our everyday lives, and how our health, environment, and economy depend on reliable access to clean water.

The message is simple: water can't be taken for granted. Let's make sure no one has to experience a day without it.

Sunrise over Sharpsburg!

This image was captured via drone by Jonathan earlier this week.

Jonathan and Mark have been taking the drone out for some practice flights and testing out the video, photo and infrared features. We're excited for how this new tool is going to be able to help systems get a birds eye view of their plants, water towers, and more... like a beautiful fall sunrise

MRWA is celebrating Source Water Protection Week!

We've spent this week highlighting how important it is to and today we wanted to share one of the fun tools we've added to our arsenal to help towns and systems do just that - our drone!

But what role can a drone play in helping to protect source water? By using the drone, we can provide high resolution site map images, even greater resolution than satellite images. These images are then used as part of Source Water Protection plans, providing a clearer picture of well head protection areas and/or watershed.

When looking at the protection of surface water, using the drone allows us to see any algae blooms that may be arise.

And this isn't all! Think water tower inspections, before/during/after shots of renovations, emergency response, and even documenting water level changes due to drought or floods! When it comes to using our drone, we've only scratched the surface (pun intended) of it's uses.

If there is one thing that's been clear this week, it's that it requires everyone's help to . If your system or town needs assistance in developing a plan for ensuring the protection of your source water, be sure to reach out to Jonathan at [email protected]

MRWA is celebrating Source Water Protection Week!

One of the important roles of our Source Water Specialist is to coordinate with state, county, and local agencies in identifying and prioritizing areas for source water protection programs. He collaborates between multi-jurisdictional entities and local, county, state and federal agencies to establish Source Water Protection Plans.

A recent Source Water Protection plan for Lake Gordon and Lake Koon is a great example of how multiple jurisdictions impact source water. The lakes are the source of drinking water for the City of Cumberland (the intake in on Lake Gordon and Lake Koon is a secondary reservoir that outflows to Lake Gordon from the Thomas Koon Dam). The location itself is actually in PA, but the municipality served is in Maryland, so managing this resource is a collaboration between Pennsylvania and Maryland groups, the Evitts Creek Steering Committee

MRWA is celebrating Source Water Protection Week!

When we tackle water quality concerns at the source, we create a positive impact on our natural environment. Clean water benefits plants, trees and wildlife, ensuring a thriving ecosystem.

MRWA is celebrating Source Water Protection Week!

Do you know where your water comes from? And why do we all need to help ? The best way to assure we have high quality drinking water at the tap is to protect our beautiful water sources. If we keep our rivers, lakes and underground wells free from pollution, it's easier and less expensive to keep water safe and healthy.

Lake Koon (pictured), the Susquehanna River, Northeast Creek are just a few examples of source water that feed towns in rural Maryland.

This week, Maryland Rural Water celebrates Source Water protection Week.

Today, we want you to meet our Source Water Protection Specialist, Jonathan Lacher, Jonathan travels around the state assisting rural communities reduce and eliminate risks to their source water by helping to develop Source Water Protection Plans. Once the plan is created, he helps communities with training and implementation of the plan to protect both ground and surface water supplies.

Jonathan is also a key player when it comes to community education on the water supply and water industry. From teaching kids about how they interact with the water supply to sharing the many job opportunities in the water industry at career fairs, Jonathan works to make sure everyone knows how their lives impact the water they drink.

This week, members of MRWA’s staff and board had the pleasure of attending WaterPro conference in New Orleans! πŸ’œπŸ’šπŸ’›. There was great classes and networking with our friend and colleagues from across the county, and we even made time for a little fun 🎺🎷
Congratulations to BJ Gullion, MD winner of the ultimate meter challenge at our conference in April, who made it to the semi final round at the national competition!
