Long Island: Last Hope is offering free spay and neuter assistance for family pet cats to qualifying low-income families who are currently receiving government assistance.

🐈 New Last Hope Program: Free Cat Spay & Neuter Assistance for Owners Facing Financial Need. šŸ”
😻 Helping Families Keep Their Cats Happy, Healthy & Home.
Last Hope believes every cat deserves the chance to live a healthy, happy life in a loving home. We also understand that veterinary care can sometimes be difficult to afford, especially for families facing financial challenges.

That’s why Last Hope is offering free spay and neuter assistance for family pet cats to qualifying low-income families who are currently receiving government assistance.

Spaying and neutering your cat is an important part of responsible pet care. It can help protect your cat’s health, prevent unwanted litters, and help reduce the number of kittens entering shelters and rescues. Most importantly, this program is designed to help families keep the cats they love while making an important veterinary procedure more accessible.

If your family qualifies, we’re here to help. You can apply for assistance by filling out the application on the homepage of our website:
www.lasthopeanimalrescue.org
Please complete the application with as much information as possible, email your application to [email protected], and our team will review your request.

Together, we can help keep cats healthy, prevent unwanted litters, and support families in keeping their beloved pets where they belong safe, loved, and at home.

Note: This new Last Hope program is for owned, pet cats, not for trapped feral cats.

Fall reminder, courtesy of Home Sweet Home Animal Rescue of Long Island…
DO NOT USE CRAFT STRAW FOR CAT SHELTERS! Most of the craft straws are crushed/shredded and therefore don’t have the insulating properties needed. Other craft straws are bleached, others have a tacking substance that makes it sticky. It is not optimum for the purpose needed.

Fall is upon us and it’s time to start thinking about the Feral Cats and their outdoor shelters. As has been reiterated many times, the shelters should be filled with straw, not hay. However, craft straw is not appropriate either! The type you buy at Michaels, Amazon and other craft stores does not provide the insulation that is needed. You need to buy bales of straw from feed stores or landscaping companies or nurseries. Straw is a natural insulator that has been used effectively for centuries to keep people and animals warm. It is hollow, acts as a natural insulator, is not edible, It doesn’t absorb water and is not prone to mold. It is a natural insulating material. Hay on the other hand, absorbs water, is digestible, does promote mold growth and does not keep animals warm! Do not use hay, and be WARNED that CRAFT straw is often ineffective and inappropriate for the use in cat shelters.

A local resident I’ve never met, or even had a conversation with sent me this.

Apparently, some people are willing to let politics determine whether they’ll recommend an animal rescuer. Let that sink in.

What kind of self-proclaimed ā€œanimal loverā€ refuses to support or recommend a rescue because they don’t agree with someone’s political views? Animals don’t vote. They don’t care about political parties. They just need help.

I swear, we’ve completely lost the plot. Somehow, even rescuing animals has become political. Absolutely bonkers.

Every TNR person can relate…
- Setting up traps & cameras
- Monitoring videos
- Preparing recuperation cages
- Getting the cat used to eating from the trap
- Scheduling the vet appointment
And after all that… find out the homeowner was afraid the cat wouldn’t eat, so she’s been leaving out food. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø
Just one of the many challenges we face.
