🇺🇸 You’re Invited: Veterans Photo Display Unveiling

Schenectady County invites veterans, their families, and the community to celebrate our local veterans at the unveiling of this year’s Veterans Photo Display.

Featuring photos of local men and women during their time in service, the exhibit will be on display at Proctors throughout November.

Components and Symbolism of a Battlefield Cross.

According to the U.S. Army Field Manual and military tradition, each piece of the display carries a distinct meaning:

• Inverted R***e (with bayonet): Planted barrel-first into the ground, it signifies that the soldier was killed in action, went down fighting, or that a brief pause has been called for prayer and tribute.
• Combat Boots: Placed at the base, they represent the fallen warrior's final march into battle. For paratroopers, a beret may replace or accompany the gear to signify a final jump.
• Dog Tags: Hung from the r***e stock or placed on the boots, they symbolize the individual identity of the fallen and ensure they are "never to be forgotten".
• Combat Helmet: Placed upright on top of the r***e stock, it signifies that the soldier's earthly combat duties are finished and their defense of others has concluded.

History and Purpose:

• Origins: While early field markers of weapons and wooden plaques date back to the American Civil War and World Wars I and II, the configuration evolved into a standardized memorial during later conflicts like Vietnam, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terror.
• Psychological Closure: In active war zones where surviving unit members cannot immediately travel home for a traditional funeral, the Battlefield Cross serves as a vital focal point for a local memorial ceremony.
• The Ritual: During the service, the unit holds a final roll call, recites prayers, shares military service records, and allows comrades to approach the cross individually to salute, pray, or grieve before returning to duty.
