During WWI, nine companies from the US 77th Division were isolated in the Argonne Forest in France. Surrounded by German forces, their only way to communicate was through homing pigeons. Cher Ami was their last remaining homing pigeon, and they sent him off with a message of their location. While flying back, German soldiers shot at him through the breast, but Cher Ami pressed on and made it with the message. He was missing his right leg and blinded in his left eye, but thanks to his message they were able to rescue the Lost Battalion. Cher Ami was brought back to the US and when he died in 1919, his body was put on display at the Smithsonian Institution. Memorial Page: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/8636364/cher_ami
