A mother found in the trunk of her car, two children missing and a weathered stone marker in the woods. One of Pennsylvania’s most enduring cases, the disappearance of the Reinert children, came to light on this day in 1979. The only clue to where the children may be, is in this photograph that was discovered among the belongings of a man once convicted in the case. It showed a weathered stone marker in an unknown wooded area. Investigators believe it may mark the final resting place of 11-year-old Karen Reinert and her 10-year-old brother Michael, but to this day, the location in the photo has never been identified. The children were last seen on a rainy Friday evening in June 1979, getting into a car with their mother, Susan Reinert, outside their suburban Philadelphia home. Three days later, on June 25th, that car was found in a hotel parking lot near Harrisburg, about 90 miles away. Susan was found in the hatchback. The children were gone. Two men closely connected to Susan through her workplace ( a fellow teacher who was also her fiance, and the school Principal) were later convicted in the case. But more than four decades later, Karen and Michael’s whereabouts remain unknown.
