The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. Since then, the VFW's voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The VFW also has fought for improving VA medical centers services for women veterans. Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Women in Military Service memorials, the VFW in 2005 became the first veterans' organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010. Annually, the nearly 2 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliaries contribute more than 8.6 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week. From providing over $3 million in college scholarships and savings bonds to students every year, to encouraging elevation of the Department of Veterans Affairs to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there.

⚓ October 13 – Happy 251st Birthday, U.S. Navy!

🇺🇸 HAPPY 251ST BIRTHDAY, UNITED STATES NAVY! ⚓

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established the beginnings of what would become the United States Navy.

Today, we celebrate 251 years of courage, honor, commitment, and unwavering service to our nation!

From the wooden sailing ships of the Revolutionary War to today's technologically advanced fleet, generations of American Sailors have answered the call to defend our freedom, protect our shores, and safeguard our nation around the world.

For more than two and a half centuries, the men and women of the United States Navy have stood ready to serve, often spending months away from their families and loved ones to protect the freedoms we enjoy.

At VFW Post 9126, we proudly recognize the Navy veterans among our ranks, those currently serving, and the generations of Sailors who came before them.

To every Sailor, past and present, thank you for your sacrifice, dedication, and service.

⚓ 251 YEARS OF HONOR, COURAGE, AND COMMITMENT!

🇺🇸 Happy Birthday, United States Navy!

HOOYAH, NAVY! ⚓🇺🇸

🇺🇸 October 12 – USS Cole Attack: 26th Anniversary

⚓ REMEMBERING THE FALLEN | USS COLE (DDG-67) ⚓

Today, October 12, 2026, marks 26 years since the devastating terrorist attack on the USS Cole while refueling in the port of Aden, Yemen.

On that tragic day in 2000, 17 American Sailors lost their lives, and 37 others were wounded when terrorists detonated explosives alongside the ship.

In the face of unimaginable destruction, the surviving crew demonstrated extraordinary courage, determination, and resilience. Their heroic efforts saved their ship and the lives of their fellow Sailors.

Today, we pause to remember the 17 heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, honor those who survived, and stand with the families whose lives were forever changed.

Their sacrifice is a solemn reminder that the cost of freedom is often paid far from home.

From all of us at VFW Post 9126, we honor their memory and reaffirm our promise:

🇺🇸 WE WILL NEVER FORGET.

⚓ Rest easy, Shipmates. We have the watch.

🇺🇸 It’s VFW Day.

And yeah, the VFW has been around for a long time. But the mission? It’s still very much needed today.

The VFW is veterans helping veterans. It’s showing up for the person who needs a hand, fighting for the benefits veterans have earned, remembering those who came before us, and making sure the next generation knows they have a place here.
Different generations. Different stories. Different reasons we served.

One thing in common: we’re still in this together.

VFW Post 9126 is proud to be part of that tradition — while looking ahead and making sure the VFW has a place for the veterans coming next.

To every veteran who has worn the uniform: Happy VFW Day.

Come be part of it. 🇺🇸

Honoring the past. Embracing the future.
