It is with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to Valerie Huyard, manager and animal husbandry lead at Springton Manor Farm. Her love and care for the farm’s animals is well known. The animals are healthy, happy, and friendly because of the devotion of Val and her team. Val worked for Chester County for 21 years, starting in maintenance at Hibernia – including living in one of the cottages on Lions Head Drive. She came to Springton Manor in early 2005, working with Farmer Jim Balentine, when the farm residents were 2 horses, 1 Shetland pony, 1 donkey, 4 goats, 8 sheep, 3 pigs and a small herd of cattle. Since then, the farm residents have changed to include 2 horses, 3 donkeys, 18 goats, 15 sheep, 1 llama, numerous chickens and a peacock. In early 2018 Val became the animal care lead at the farm. Since then, Val has overseen the arrival of the horses, Triples and Kid, and a miniature donkey, Jackson – who now share the north pasture. Under her guidance, a llama has joined the flock to protect the sheep from predators. Val is leaving the farm with a legacy of friendly animals, healthy herds and flocks, proper pasture rotation practices and parasite prevention (one reason the farm no longer keeps cows), good staff teamwork and effective communications at the farm and with the County. When asked about what makes her most proud from her time at Springton Manor, she said, “being there with many animals over the years in their final moments. And for being there with so many animals over the years during their very first moments. I’ve tended the Sick, nursed the hungry, and fixed lots of boo-boos.”
It is with a sense of accomplishment, she says “I know in my heart that the timing is right, my mission at Springton is complete, and that I have equipped my coworkers with the confidence and the knowledge to keep improving upon what we do.”
Val will be missed by the animals and farm visitors. We wish Val, and her husband, Jason, and their son, Logan, all the best in their new adventures in the Adirondacks!
