Chester County 2020

Chester County 2020 "Provides programs for education, agriculture, and workshops to help create livable communities."

TO THE CHESTER COUNTY COMMUNITY
Dear Friends:

First, we at Chester County 20/20 hope you and yours are staying safe in the current health crisis by following experts’ advice, employing common sense, and doing whatever you can to help others. We will see this through - together.

It’s important for organizations – and individuals – to ask themselves, “What is essential? What can we forego, or do differently to get through this responsibly?”

To that end, CC20/20 has postponed all events for large groups, indefinitely. The Master Planner Courses are re-scheduled for: Community Planning (2nd & 3rd sessions) 10/20, 10/27; Zoning 10/29, 11/5, 11/12. Our program partner, the West Chester University Graduate Center, has provided classroom space that will support more than adequate distancing for our students.

Our current A+ Homes program continues via telephone and internet.

Last - and we’re disappointed to tell you this – we are re-scheduling our 9th Annual Citizen Planner Reception from April 30, 2020 to April 29, 2021. We love presenting this event. It’s a great chance to get together, re-affirm our commitment to smart growth and wise land use, and celebrate the accomplishments of special individuals. But we can’t call the reception an ‘essential’ part of our work. We respect our supporters’ time and know the challenges everyone will face when we return to ‘a new normal,’ so the party must wait.

We had a great line-up: we plan to present the same program in 2021:

- Barbara Cohen, a leader in Phoenixville’s revitalization
- Victory Brewing Co., a job creator, economy-booster and brownfield developer
- Special recognition for the Honorable Andy Dinniman
- Our speakers include distinguished conservationist Bob Struble, former PA State Representative Carole Rubley, and Commissioner Josh Maxwell
- Serving as Emcee - Malcom Johnstone, Executive Director of the West Chester Business Improvement District

We hope these 20/20 program changes will make the rest of your year less complicated. We are to have lots to celebrate in April 2021 at the Citizen Planner Reception! Please plan to support this valuable, unique event and join us for fun and fellowship.

Be safe and stay well …
Sincerely, CC20/20 Board and Staff

It’s important for organizations – and individuals – to ask themselves, “What is essential? What can we forego, or do differently to get through this responsibly?”

To that end, CC20/20 has postponed all events for large groups, indefinitely. The Spring Master Planner Courses – typically attended by around 20 students – are rescheduled for October – November 2020. Our program partner, the West Chester University Graduate Center, has provided classroom space that will support more than adequate distancing for our students.

A great deal of our program work can be conducted via telephone and email, and those tasks are proceeding as usual.

Lastly, and we’re disappointed to tell you this – we are re-scheduling our 9th Annual Citizen Planner Reception from April 30, 2020 to April 29, 2021. We love presenting this event. We had a great line-up for this year’s party and our plan is to present this wonderful program to you in 2021.

When folks ask, "What does Chester County 2020 do?" We could answer a couple of different ways. We could go pedantic, and say, "Well, you understand Pennsylvania is a COMMONWEALTH, governed by a MUNICIPALITIES CODE..." and watch people nod out. Or we could go fundamental, and give the answer we come up with when we regularly ask ourselves the same question: "CHESTER COUNTY 2020 PROVIDES RELIABLE INFORMATION, AND FACILITATES INFORMED, CIVIL DISCOURSE." We provide accredited Training Courses; we facilitate community workshops; we present the Citizen Planner Breakfasts, like the one coming up on Aug. 21. Land use issues are the common thread, but you know, there's little in life that doesn't have a land use dimension. Unless you live on a yacht, or in a zeppelin. We find there's a limitless appetite for informed, civil discourse. Our ability to provide is limited only by the amount of public support we can gain. So come to Breakfast, take a Course, attend a workshop and visit www.cc2020.org to make a contribution and learn more about us. Let's finish the post by paraphrasing the Great Etta James: "We bring solid information to your neighborhood. Civil Discourse is our business, and business is good..." Cheers!

The mean Chester County income can’t afford the mean Chester County home. That can include new grads starting their careers, seniors on fixed incomes, empty-nesters downsizing, and the folks who provide the services and amenities we rely on. They have a tough time finding homes in their communities, near their workplaces.

Oh, boy! We've finished populating the panel for our June 20 'Mixed-Use Opportunities' Breakfast. At the emergency services training cent in South Coatesville, 7:00am - 8:45am. Panelists include: Shannon Rossman, Director of the Berks Cty. Planning Commission; Mimi Gleason, West Whiteland Twp. Manager; Dottie Ives Dewey, Chair, WCUPA Dept. of Geography & Planning. Here's the deal: there's a lot of interest in mixed-use development as a way to meet folks' need for places to live, work, shop, play, etc. 'Mixed-Use' stated most simply means putting those activities together rather than having them sprawling out all over the place. And if we combat sprawl, we reduce the need for driving, we preserve the non-developed areas we all love, and we have a chance to boost municipal revenues. Pretty good, hunh? There's lots of interest in mixed-use development, but not a uniform understanding of just what it is. That means it's BREAKFAST TIME! Shannon will give us an overview of some successful, mature mixed-use development; Mimi will share her experience with an ongoing example we all know: Main St. Exton; Dottie help the group understand the technical aspects of mixed-use. 'cause it's got real potential, but it ain't simple and it ain't one-size-fits-all. This'll be a fun session and we gah-rawn-tee you'll leave saying, "Hey! I didn't know THAT!" See you June 20!
Chester County 2020 and the Citizen Planners invite you to Breakfast:

“Mixed-Use Zoning and Smart Growth”
With
Shannon Rossman, AICP – Mimi Gleason W. Whiteland Twp. Manager – Dr. Dorothy Ives Dewey, Chair WCUPA Geography & Planning Dept.

Thursday June 20th, 7:00am – 8:45am
At the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus Academic Building

Mixed-use and similar approaches to Smart Growth can achieve wonderful things to grow municipal revenues while respecting preservation goals. But it’s not simple! Our three experts will provide: An overview of a mature, regional mixed-use project; A look at evolving mixed-use patterns in our County right now; Insight into the technical aspects of mixed-use and similar projects. These strategies are versatile tools to manage growth responsibly, but they are not ‘one size fits all.’

This Breakfast, like all the CC2020 programs, is designed to provide decision-makers with reliable information to facilitate informed civil discourse around land use issues. Don’t miss it!
