Happy Constitution Week! For nearly 70 years, the DAR has proudly led the way in championing September 17-23 as Constitution Week. The goals are as meaningful today as ever: to inspire citizens to cherish and protect the Constitution, to celebrate it as the foundation of our freedoms, and to encourage learning about the events that shaped its creation.

Today, on National Maritime Day, we recognize the brave heroes of the U.S. Merchant Marines, whose courage and service have supported our nation in times of peace and war.

From delivering essential supplies across the seas during WWII to continuing critical missions today, the Merchant Mariners have always answered the call.

To these heroes who've kept our lifelines open and supported our military from behind the scenes, we say thank you. Your service matters, and today, we honor you! ⚓️🇺🇸

Today, on National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, we honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of America’s prisoners of war. 🇺🇸

These brave men and women endured unimaginable hardships in captivity, yet their resilience, loyalty, and unbreakable spirit never wavered. These heroes remind us what it means to serve with honor — even in the face of the most difficult circumstances.

Observed on April 9, this day marks the anniversary of the start of the Bataan Death March in 1942 — when tens of thousands of American service members were forced to march over 60 brutal miles as prisoners of the Japanese army. Many did not survive, but their strength and resilience became a powerful symbol of American bravery and endurance.

To all former POWs and their families: we see you, we thank you, and we will never forget your sacrifice.

Gold Star Spouses Day is observed annually on April 5th to honor the surviving spouses of fallen service members, recognizing their resilience and sacrifice.

Gold Star Spouses Day is a day to show support for these families, honor the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, and pay tribute to the strength, resilience, and courage of these spouses.

History:
The tradition of honoring Gold Star families dates back to the aftermath of World War I, when families of military members would display service flags with a blue star for each family member serving. If a service member died, the blue star was replaced with a gold star.

Congress Designation:
In 2010, Congress designated April 5th as Gold Star Spouses Day.
