It has been over a year since GTU and community rallied at ’s Garfield campus to demand a halt to their housing demolition. It’s difficult to look at this huge empty lot and think of the Glendale residents who were evicted and uprooted to build it.
For months after demolition, fenced off sidewalk all around this block, severely limiting accessibility even outside their campus grounds. Now, construction debris and roadblocks still make it difficult to navigate the public sidewalk.
It’s interesting to note the difference so far between what we were told would be built with our taxpayer money, and the barren lot that exists now. According to the GCC site, they are 98% done with construction. Our city council members claim that lack of housing is the reason for the sky high rents in Glendale, but they were happy to allow the destruction of 13 buildings and over 60 units. They blamed the evictions on Glendale residents for not “stepping up to organize” sooner. A year later, we are still thinking of the longtime Glendale residents who were forced from their homes. We still hope the community can find a use for this empty lot that benefits us all.
