Nothing says “welcome home” quite like a basket filled with the essentials that help turn a new house into a home—laundry soap, pots and pans, fresh bathroom towels, and so much more.

For more than a decade, the Assistance League Glendale has been a steadfast and compassionate partner in supporting Ascencia’s mission in so many meaningful ways. One program that continues to bring hope, comfort, and genuine smiles to our newly housed clients is the Welcome Home Basket program.

Each basket is lovingly filled by Assistance League of Glendale volunteers with thoughtful, brand-new essentials that help our clients begin this next chapter of their lives with dignity and a sense of belonging. And when Ascencia reaches out, these incredible volunteers make sure the baskets are delivered in a timely manner.

We are deeply grateful to every member of the Assistance League of Glendale for your unwavering dedication, generosity, and compassion. Year after year, you continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our unhoused neighbors as they move into their new homes!

All of us at Ascencia want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to Pastor JR CarMichael, Lorri Hubert, and the entire Love the 818 team from South Hills Burbank Church. Guest Chef Team, Love the 818, has become such a tremendous part of the Ascencia community, and has been since 2017.

Last week, Love the 818 set up a good old-fashioned backyard barbecue at Ascencia, preparing a sumptuous feast of BBQ chicken and ribs, homemade macaroni and potato salads, and corn on the cob.

Lorri shared, “We just believe that we are boots on the ground, ready to serve our communities. It needs to be more than just talking about it, but more importantly, putting your witness into action.

That spirit captures something powerful about service. Giving back isn't only about what we give; it is about how we show up. It is about sitting across the table from someone, sharing a meal, listening to what they want, learning their name, laughing together, and creating moments of normalcy and belonging.

One evening, a resident approached the team and shared that whenever they saw “Love the 818” written on the whiteboard, they made a point of coming to the meal. That simple statement says everything.

Love the 818 team doesn't simply ask, “What can we give?” They ask, “What would you like?” They fellowship with them, care for the animals at the shelter, and have embraced Ascencia as part of their own community.

This is what giving back can look like.

Consider volunteering. Share a meal. Lend your time. Bring your family, friends, church, workplace, or community group together to serve.

Because sometimes the most meaningful way to change a life is simply to show up, pull up a chair, and share a meal.

Together, we can make a difference!

A heartfelt thank you to the students and staff at West Coast University for assembling 68 snack bags filled with hearty treats and Gatorade for our Glendale Street Outreach team.

These bags are more than food—they’re a bridge to connection, compassion, and hope. Each one gives our outreach team an opportunity to start a conversation with someone experiencing homelessness and connect them with resources that can help change their future.

In 2025, 337 individuals connected with Ascencia through street outreach. Every connection begins with a first step. Thank you, West Coast University, for helping us remind our neighbors that they are seen, they are valued, and they are not alone.

Michael spent six months on the streets of Downtown LA and West Hollywood. A motorcycle accident and years of trauma had torn his life apart, and an eviction put him out on the streets.

Healthcare in Action referred him to Ascencia, and he moved into our emergency shelter in Glendale. With his case manager Joseph Santangelo, Michael received one on one case management, and was immediately provided with employment services, occupational therapy and whole host of other resources.

This May, Michael moved into his own place in Chinatown, secured with a housing voucher. It is his home, where he can rebuild his life, and put the past behind.

97% of the neighbors we house are still housed a year later. Thank you for supporting our mission, our case managers, but more importantly, the people who we serve.

Welcome Lisa Mayti, our new Director of Programs!

Lisa brings more than 20 years in human services, housing, homeless services, developmental disability services, and community-based support. She has run multi-million-dollar budgets and led large teams across Ohio, Florida, and California.

She comes to us from LA Family Housing and the North Los Angeles County Regional Center.

She works from data. She builds partnerships across agencies, hospitals, courts, and neighborhoods. She coaches the people she leads.
