Congratulations to Cohort 4 and all Glendale Community College College Corps Fellows! 🎓

On May 29, GCC celebrated its College Corps Graduation. We couldn't be prouder to have been part of it.

For four years, Ascencia has served as a host partner for the College Corps program. GCC Fellows have worked alongside our staff covering the front desk, preparing and serving meals, organizing our food pantry, and managing supply inventory. 383 service hours from this cohort alone.

Their dedication made our team stronger and helped us serve our Glendale neighbors more effectively. The College Corps program creates debt-free pathways to higher education while connecting students to real community need.

That's a combination that works. We've seen it firsthand.

To every Fellow in Cohort 4: thank you for choosing Ascencia, and congratulations on everything you've earned.

Another example of Rotarians coming together in service above self. We were honored to host the Guest Chef Breakfast at Ascencia earlier this week. Heartwarming, simple, and focused on supporting a partner that relies heavily on private funding. Especially important with budget pressures.

Thank you to Ascencia, Deputy Fire Chief Todd, the Glendale Fire Department, and the community partners who make this work possible. If you’d like to learn ways to support Ascencia’s mission, send us a DM—we’re happy to connect you.

As all of you know, our Wishlist Wednesday covers the important essentials. But once a month, we’re asking for items that can make one’s day a little lighter and a little bit brighter. 🎲🍵🧦

This month we’re wishing for board games, tea, cozy socks, art supplies & journals.

Thank you for helping us add a little fun and laughter to our resident’s day!

What a morning!

We joined Glendale Sunrise Rotary at Forest Lawn this Memorial Day for their Field of Honor ceremony. 1,000 flags on the grass, families gathered, and a community pausing to remember the people who gave everything.

Rotary President Inder Risam and Barry Bradley presented us with the Rotary International Service Above Self Award, and honestly, we were a little speechless.

Our Director of Development Camille Guerrero accepted it on behalf of our whole team.

Barry said something we keep coming back to: "Ascencia not only offers help. It restores dignity, hope, and possibility."

That's because of you, community members. Your donations, your volunteer hours, your Guest Chef meals, your belief in our shared work. This award belongs to this family as much as it belongs to us.

Thank you, Sunrise Rotary, for years of friendship and for this incredible honor. We don't take any of it for granted. 🏅

Kevan didn't know exactly when things fell apart. He just knew they had.

Homelessness. Substance use. Every relationship he'd built, gone. He came back to California looking for a fresh start and found that the past had followed him here.

What changed wasn't luck. It was a case manager who listened, and referred him to Ascencia.

At Ascencia, Kevan got long-term case management, psychiatric care, substance abuse support, and eventually, a permanent home. He built his life back one step at a time. And he did the work.

He thanks Ascencia. But the truth is: he showed up. Every single time.

Donor-supported services made that possible. If Kevan's story moves you, now is the time to give. The link is in our bio.

Or, if you wish to give to this client and more: order items through our Amazon Wishlist, send them to the "Ascencia Development" address, and send a copy of your order receipt to [email protected]. Once your donation arrives, each client's case-manager will hand deliver your donations to their new home.

Too often, people experiencing homelessness are talked about instead of listened to.

Compassion, however, begins with hearing real stories from people who have lived it firsthand. Take it from Ascencia’s Lead Outreach Case Manager, Alfred, who has been with us for many years. He, alongside our street outreach team, hit the streets in search of those who need help. He knows that while not everyone is ready to accept help, everyone deserves the opportunity to.

Before working with Ascencia, Alfred had experienced homelessness himself. His firsthand account, as well as his knowledge of the contributing factors that leave people unhoused, feed the bottomless well of kindness that he has to offer. Rather than waiting for referrals, our team is out building relationships with people who may otherwise slip through the cracks.

Homelessness isn’t solved through judgment but through community, dignity, and people willing to care enough to act.

Every bed made, every meal served, and every heart to heart can change the course of someone’s life.

For 20 years, our shelter doors have been open because of your generous support, your donations save lives, thank you for showing up for our neighbors when they need it most. ❤️

The homelessness crisis in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities is bigger than most people realize.

A 2024 study from the USC Price School of Public Policy and the UCLA Asian American Studies Center sheds light on something that often goes unseen:

Although AANHPI communities make up over 11% of LA County’s population, experiences of homelessness and housing instability are historically underreported.

Many Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander families facing housing insecurity are simply not being counted ; meaning many people are also not getting connected to the support and resources they need. When entire communities are overlooked, the crisis becomes even harder to solve.

At Ascencia, we believe every person deserves to be seen, heard, and supported. Our mission of lifting people out of homelessness through housing, supportive services, and community care exists for all, but especially for those whose struggles too often go unnoticed.

If you or someone that you know are a member of the AANHPI community and facing housing instability, you can find resources with Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles or Americans Advancing Justice Southern California
