Saving Paws Project

Saving Paws Project Dedicated to saving animals & spreading awareness on the over population of homeless pets. Educate. Inspire. Connect. We’re the voice for the voiceless.

With approximately 4-6 million companion animals killed in US shelters every year, we knew we had to partake in the efforts to reduce this number. We do this by educating communities on the severity of the issues and then by showing how you and anyone else can help to reduce these numbers one animal at a time. www.SavingPawsProject.com

The dog that inspired Saving Paws Project featured on dog.com!

Thank you so much for sharing Bo**er's story, Jenny Anderson!

*Rescuing My Best Friend*

"My Sister had gone to take one of her friends home when she spotted a skinny, white dog walking down the street. My sister being the animal lover that she is, stopped, and opened the car door. The dog jumped right in without any hesitation. Little did we know this happy white dog would change our lives.
Immediately we did what we do with every other stray dog that we find, we posted lost dog signs, checked animal shelters, posted her online and took her to the vet to be scanned to see if her previous owner had microchipped her. We had no leads and within a few days she was already making herself at home. We were falling in love with this sweet heart and with no luck finding her owners we had discussed keeping her a part of the family. She earned the nickname Bo**er Nut and for some reason she responded to it, so it stuck. Bo**er is now her name.
Although we had found her awfully skinny she was gaining weight very fast. Since we were talking about keeping her anyways we brought her to the veterinarian for a full evaluation. We couldn’t have prepared ourselves for the outcome of that visit. Boog was healthy but full-term pregnant!
As the following week passed we did everything we could to make sure Boog was comfortable. We did our research on dog births, purchased supplies and set up several safe spots around the house for her to decide where she was comfortable giving birth. We were very anxious, we hadn’t known Boog very long but we wanted her to feel comfortable in this new home and wanted things to run smoothly. The thought of her possibly losing any of her puppies was scary.
April 25th around twelve AM my Sister awoke to a cry of a tiny puppy! My sister ran around the house crying for everyone to wake up and come help. Boog chose my sister’s closet and had pushed her first puppy out, she was beautiful! Tears came to everyone’s eyes as we gathered around to help, Boog was doing great. She allowed us to inspect the puppy and make sure the lungs were clear of fluid. She pushed 3 puppies out like a pro but by the time it came to push the 4th puppy out she was exhausted. She had completely stopped pushing about mid-way and we knew if we didn’t help that this puppy could suffocate. Boog allowed my Mom to reach down in the closet to help pull puppy number 4 out, she was healthy. The anticipation of not knowing how many more puppies were to still come or if she could even push anymore made us very nervous.
Soon after puppy number 5 arrived, Boog pushed her out with no problem until she licked the puppy’s sack off too close to the umbilical cord and the puppy began bleeding perversely. My Mother applied pressure with a small cloth while I rushed to the closest drug store for liquid band aid. Luckily it did the trick to stop the bleeding. Boog had stopped pushing by now bringing our total to five new puppies, four girls and one boy!
We were in love with Boog and all the puppies. Watching Boog evolve into a mother and seeing the bond that they shared was uplifting. When it came time to let the puppies go it was very hard on all of us so we were only able to give two away, and only to our close friends.
This experience is one that has forever rounded me in life and encouraged me to involve myself with animals. While we were lucky to find homes for the two puppies and to keep the rest, I encourage others to adopt from shelters and rescue groups. There are so many other animals out there that are not as lucky as Boog. She was very fortunate to have found my Sister that night or who know where her and her puppies could have ended up. Boog has been such an amazing inspiration to my family and she is spoiled rotten for it!"
