WOMEN’S CIVIC LEAGUE OF GLENDALE, INC.The Women’s Civic League of Glendale has been an active, vibrant, and growing organization for over 70 years. The Civic League was formed in 1946 for the purpose of the study and consideration of civic, economic, and legislative questions. To this day, its members strive to advance non-partisan awareness of civic affairs. There is no fundraising involved in it
s work and positions are not taken on ballot measures nor are candidates sponsored.The Civic League fulfills its mission by holding 8 luncheon meetings per year on the fourth Thursday, September through May (except November) at which leaders from the local, state, andnational levels are invited to address the membership. Many of Glendale’s top administrators, including the City of Glendale’s City Manager; Chief of Police, Fire Chief, the Glendale Community College President, and Superintendent of the Glendale Unified School District; haveaddressed the organization over the past several years.Elected representatives to both Sacramento and Washington D.C. Occasionally the guest speaker is from an organization or institution that works for the betterment of the community, such as representatives from Glendale Healthy Kids, or the Pasadena Humane Society and Glendale Humane Society, both of which handle animal-related issues for Glendale.In a year when a local election is taking place, the Civic League invites those running for public office such as on the City Council, Glendale Unified School District Board, or the Glendale Community College District Board, to participate in a candidates’ forum. The candidates’ opinions are solicited on specific topics related to the position they are seeking. True to the League’s mission, no endorsements are made.The membership includes many individuals who are extremely active in other citywide organizations including elected officials at local, state and national levels. This brings about the exchange of information and ideas that benefit all citizens of the City. The Civic League providesthese benefits at very little cost to members—current dues are $20 per year and monthly luncheon meetings are about equally priced.Men are as welcome to join as women and should not be deterred from joining because of the “Women” that appears in the organizations name—it is simply a holdover of respect for those women who started the Civic League in 1946.Anyone wishing more information or perhaps wanting to pursue membership is invited contact the Civic League at 818-248-1707.
