As I have always told parents, they are truly their child's only advocate. But how, to whom and when should you advocate? The Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented (CAGT) is a great place to find help and resources for parents of gifted students. This session will provide you with information you need to support your child and all gifted children throughout Colorado.

A veteran teacher of over 33 years, my work with gifted and 2e children began almost three decades ago when it was apparent my son was gifted, and in school was diagnosed with ADHD. With a Masters in Education and M.A. endorsement in GT, most of my career was spent as a GT Teacher and Gifted Facilitator at a gifted magnet school. When “retired” I became a 2e Consultant for the Colorado Department of Education. I’ve been with CAGT for over a decade and am now the Executive Director. A former principal said I eat, sleep and dream gifted – it’s truly my life’s work!

"Finding the Best Fit Program for Your Gifted Student"

How does one discern the quality of a gifted program? There are many factors to consider when evaluating and designing schools and education programs for gifted youth. What may be a strong fit for one gifted child, may not be for another given contrasting strengths, interests and needs. Some programs communicate wonderful intentions, yet fall short in realizing them in practice. Others have exceptional practices, but don't market them well. In this session, participants will be provided a research-informed framework to deepen understanding of the factors influencing outcomes. Each will leave feeling better prepared to navigate the complexities of education related decision making for gifted youth.

Dr. Kate Bachtel is passionate about individualized and meaningful instruction and has a doctorate in education in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in gifted from the University of Denver. She is the founder of SoulSpark Learning, past president of SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) and has worked in a variety of roles serving gifted and twice-exceptional youth in public and private schools.

Attendance is open to interested Mensan Friends and Fam. Priority registration for members of Denver Mensa, a chapter of American Mensa.

This year will feature program threads for Young Mensans (under 18), Parents of Gifted Children, Gen Y Mensans, and all Denver Mensans at our Mega Meetings.

Denver Mensa 2021 Speaker Series: Young Mensans - Saturday, 2/13/21, 2:00 pm MT
There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved. -George Sand
It has been argued that to love and belong is one of our most basic human needs. During our time together we will discuss and begin practicing strategies for the creation of a loving life with topics to include integrity, the development of calm/peace, honoring all of our feelings, ways to practice gratitude, and celebrating those that lift us up (our sources of support) in loving kindness.

Presenters: Drs. Vanessa Ewing, Gail Stine, and Stacey Pendleton
Vanessa has served as an educator and counseling professor, consultant, and teacher- focused on exceptional children (both gifted and with areas of disability) in early childhood as well as middle school years. She loves creative writing and art projects for younger children, focused especially on social/emotional topics and themes. Gail has served as an elementary educator as well as gifted director and educator throughout the Denver Metro area for many years. She enjoys consulting and supporting educators and parents in their work with young children in both academic and social areas. Stacey has taught adolescent and adult learners with special interests in history, film, and the arts. She also coordinates assessments for gifted learners. She enjoys working 1:1 with students of all ages, as well as supporting the development of talents for those she serves.

For the second year in a row, Denver Mensa has funded a special award for the Denver Metro Regional Science and Engineering Fair. We were very impressed by this year's winner! The team conducted an analysis of the effectiveness of using goats to reduce underbrush and fire danger in neighborhood areas where prescribed burns and mastication aren't feasible options.
