🌿 Together, We’re Planting the Future of Armenia 🌿
— A message from the Wilderness and Culture Fund

We’re proud to stand alongside our incredible partners at FPWC as they near completion of their Spring 2025 tree-planting initiative—with nearly 50,000 trees now rooted in the soil of Vayots Dzor.

This isn't just about trees. It's about regenerating Armenia’s wild landscapes, restoring habitats for endangered species, and empowering local communities to become stewards of their land. From native oak and wild pear to regional pine and ash, every species planted has a role in rebalancing our shared ecosystem.

We’ve witnessed firsthand the dedication, precision, and heart FPWC brings to this work, from nurturing tree nurseries to mobilizing youth and communities. Their vision aligns perfectly with ours: to protect nature by reconnecting people with it.

🌱 This is a long-term, intergenerational impact.
🌍 This is rewilding through collaboration.

We’re honored to grow this vision together, and we invite you to follow the journey, get inspired, and support reforestation that prioritizes people and the planet.

🔥 Strengthening Armenia’s Fire Resilience 🔥
From September 10 to 13, 2024, our partner organization, FPWC, and the U.S. Forest Service led intensive forest fire prevention training at the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge, Armenia’s only privately protected area and a vital stronghold for biodiversity.

The training equipped local rangers and firefighters with essential tools and strategies to respond to the growing threat of wildfires in the region.

🌲 We support this vital knowledge exchange, protecting people, forests, and wildlife.

With habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict being major threats, the need for rescue in is more urgent than ever.

The bear rescue efforts of the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) provide care and rehabilitation to injured and orphaned bears, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat whenever possible.

The FPWC team is always on alert to rescue bears stuck in snares, cubs left without mothers, and animals living under dire conditions in restaurants and private zoos.

40+ rescued bears receive specialized care at the Wildlife Rescue Center (WRC) under the watchful eye of wildlife professionals. They regularly undergo vet checkups, socialize, and play games so necessary for their harmonious development.

For the more than 50 bears still waiting for rescue FPWC is planning to build a new rescue center that will be a perfect place for environmental education as well.

In , many hardworking hands of the team at FPWC have been busy in the last few weeks to prepare the seeds for this year’s tree planting campaign. 🌿

This process is not as easy as you might think! To reach the ambitious goals of this tree planting project, it is not enough to simply put the seeds into the ground. Hard seed coats take time to break down, and the seeds of many tree species must pass through a cold period to be able to germinate at all. And this is exactly what the team was busy doing these days: Stratification. That means, you soak the seeds in water, you arrange them in thoroughly closed plastic bags – and then you keep them in the fridge for 1 or 2 months. ❄️ After all of this, just let spring take over the work to make young trees of the sprouted seeds.

💚 How much passion, knowledge and skills this laborious work requires you can see by the sheer number of trees FPWC is aiming to plant across the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge in the heart of Armenia’s mountain steppe: 700,000 trees will transform a 300-hectare area into a crucial biological corridor. A monumental endeavour that is worth the effort, with sustainable benefits ranging from environmental conservation to community empowerment.
