WESD Gifted Education The Washington Elementary School District (WESD) Gifted Services department provides gifted services to students and families in each WESD school.

The Washington Elementary School District (WESD) Gifted Services department is committed to providing gifted services to school-age students in the Washington Elementary School District, as required by ARS 15-779.01, 15-779.02, 15.779.03 and 15.779.04. This is accomplished by ensuring the students are appropriately identified; providing appropriate service in the area of qualification; including d

ifferentiation in content, process, product and environment; supporting student learning commensurate with ability; and aligning with the District's vision, mission, and values. The WESD Gifted Services department is responsible for contributing leadership and support to gifted programs District-wide by providing training, resources and information to teachers of gifted, principals and parents.

Giftedness is a brain-based difference that means our gifted students experience the world differently and sometimes more intensely.

For the beginning of the school year, our gifted students are reading books about the brain and giftedness so they can understand their own brains and how they learn. Students in the Gifted Learning Center started reading "Your Amazing Brain" and creating neurons.

Gifted students at John Jacobs are learning brain vocabulary and thinking of questions to ask a real brain surgeon who will speak to them.

Our WESD Gifted Program received a grant from The National Inventors Hall of Fame and Intel for STEM kits for our Gifted 7th and 8th graders in Project Potential. Today Ms. Coleman's gifted students at Maryland started the"Road Rally" assembling their cars. They were having so much fun they did not want to go back to class!

It was a great week for gifted education in WESD! Students in the GLC program at Sahuaro jumped right into math with palindromes, junior high students in the FLEX program experienced a science lab involving measurement and explored types of government by building straw structures. Students at Tumbleweed learned about their giftedness with tessellation creations, and students at Desert View create selfie sculptures to describe themselves and practiced teamwork. We are excited for more great learning in the 2026-27 school year!
