The Glen Rose Field of Flags stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifice, courage, and service of our fallen heroes. Thank you to everyone who came out this weekend to reflect, remember, and pay tribute.

May we never forget those who gave it all.

Tonight marks the final evening of the Glen Rose Field of Flags Memorial.

As the sun sets on this year’s display, we invite everyone to come take one last walk through the field and reflect on the meaning behind every flag and every name represented. It has been an honor to stand alongside this community in remembering and honoring our veterans and heroes this Memorial Day weekend. 🇺🇸

Tomorrow evening, the crane will be returned to service in preparation for normal operations resuming Tuesday as we begin the process of taking down the field. Once the flags have been removed, we will make a future post with details regarding pickup times for both memorial tags and flags.

Thank you to everyone who visited, volunteered, sponsored, supported, and helped make this tribute possible. Your continued love for our veterans and our community is what makes the Glen Rose Field of Flags Memorial so meaningful each year. 🇺🇸

If you think the Glen Rose Field of Flags is beautiful during the day, you should take a walk through in the evening. 🇺🇸✨

As the sun goes down and the spotlights illuminate each flag, the field takes on a whole new meaning 😌peaceful, powerful, and deeply honoring the heroes we remember throughout Memorial Day weekend. It’s truly a sight that words can’t fully capture.

A very special thank you to our sponsors, Bennett Rentals Glen Rose, Texas First Rentals Granbury for generously providing the lighting sets that illuminate the field each evening, and EIG Crane Service Inc. Stephenville for the equipment 🏗️ that suspends our large Flag. Their continued support helps us showcase this veterans memorial in a truly unforgettable way and allows our community to experience the beauty and reflection the Field of Flags brings after sunset.

We are humbled to be a small part of something so meaningful. ❤️🤍💙

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, we wanted to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the engraving of our dog tags in preparation for the Glen Rose Field Of Flags.

Each tag carries the name of someone who served, sacrificed, and left behind a legacy worth remembering. Seeing these names engraved is a powerful reminder of the courage behind our freedoms and the importance of keeping their memory alive. 🇺🇸

We invite everyone to join us for our Opening Ceremony beginning at 9:00 AM this Friday morning 5/22/2026 as we come together in remembrance, gratitude, and unity.

Thank you, Glen Rose, for continuing to show up with such love, respect, and support for those who served our nation. This community makes this event truly special year after year. ❤️🤍💙

We look forward to honoring them together.

🇺🇸 MEET OUR HONOREES 🇺🇸
Marine Corporal Paul J. “Buddy” Himmels
Korean War Hero | Gold Star Marine | Bronze Star Recipient

Born August 7, 1930, in Windthorst, Texas, Paul J. “Buddy” Himmels was the only surviving son in a family of eleven children. Following the loss of his father, Paul could have been exempt from military service—but instead, he chose duty, courage, and service to his country.

Drafted into the United States Marine Corps in January 1951 at just 21 years old, Paul trained in San Diego before deploying to Korea with the 1st Marine Division.

As a young Corporal and Squad Leader, Paul led his Marines from the front.

On July 25, 1953, during one of the fiercest battles of the Korean War—just two days before the ceasefire—Corporal Himmels and his unit came under a devastating enemy assault. Refusing to retreat, he courageously led his men in hand-to-hand combat, defending a critical position against overwhelming enemy forces.

His actions delayed the enemy long enough for fellow Marines to regroup and defend the line.

He gave his life that day. He was just 22 years old.

For his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice, Corporal Himmels was posthumously awarded:
🎖️ Bronze Star Medal
💜 Purple Heart
🎖️ Korean Service Medal
🎖️ National Defense Service Medal
⭐ Gold Star Lapel Button

Some heroes never make it home.
Some become part of the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy every day.

This Memorial Day weekend, as the flags rise over Glen Rose, we proudly honor Marine Corporal Paul J. Himmels—a son, a brother, a Marine, and an American hero.

🇺🇸 Honor. Remember. Never Forget.

Today is the last day to purchase your flag to honor your Hero. Visit our website www.glenrosefieldofflags.org before it’s too late!

MEET OUR HONOREES:

SSGT Rocky, MWD, USMC
IED Detection/Patrol Security
Afghanistan 2012 - 2015

Being a Marine Military Working Dog (MWD) means serving a single, three year tour, and is customary in the USMC for a MWD to have multiple handlers. We are not positive how many Rocky had during his 3 year tour, but Rocky and his first handler, Cpl. Cooper, were attached to same squadron as Ssgt Jason Young, Marine Squadron VMA 223 (Bulldogs), where Jason served as maintenance/control for Harriers. Although this was the start of Rocky's 3 year tour, it happened to be Ssgt Young’s last tour.

Rocky was an IED and Patrol MWD, and had a very active combat tour. Rocky managed to serve his three year tour without acquiring any injuries. He did however break three of his four canine teeth off, in his last close combat battle with an insurgent. That battle did not end well for the insurgent, and Rocky walked away with victory!

Back on the FOB, a bond between Rocky and Jason was formed. They got along well and spent a lot of time together when they were on the base at the same time. One night, Rocky and another IED MWD found a lot of IEDs buried around the base, specifically around the sleeping bunkers, saving Jason and his entire Squadron. Jason says, “my time with Rocky, while serving in combat operations in Afghanistan, helped save me in many ways.”

After Rocky was retired in 2015, Mina Harriman, a dear friend of Jason’s wife Katarina, reached out. Mina had a humanitarian organization that helped those suffering the effects of the war for woman and children. Her organization, Linking the World, was hosting a fundraiser dinner where they were auctioning off a chance to jump-the-waiting-list for a chance to adopt a retired MWD. Ssgt Rocky was one of the two retirees being offered. AMK9 and First Foundation were the groups responsible for bringing Rocky home and finding his forever home. They said if no one bids on Rocky, they would give him to Jason. The first MWD went for $7,000.00 and Rocky started getting bids left and right. It wasn’t long before Mina seen what was happening and knew she had to step in. She stopped the auction, and told of Rocky and Jason’s time together and experiences they shared. She then opened the bidding for anyone to bid to reunite Ssgt(R) Rocky and Ssgt(R) Young. A Middle Eastern man bid the final $5000 to reunite them and Rocky was home on December 23, 2015. Some would say a Christmas miracle, and blessing.

When asked what Rocky meant to Jason and Katarina, they said “Rocky was our son. Another Marine in the house. A war ridden MWD with his own PTSD and tons of personality.” Both Rocky and Jason went through their own (PTSD) stresses and adjustments, many days one hand on one Marine, the other on the other Marine. Even though he saw his fair share of action and take downs, Rocky was a big lover who would take scratches from almost anyone. He grew to thoroughly enjoy retirement and people.

Rocky passed the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 29th 2024, at home, with his Dad and Mom. He was laid to rest the same day, near a big oak tree overlooking the Brazos River in Somervell County.

He will forever be missed and loved.

Look for Ssgt(R) Rocky's flag Memorial Day Weekend at the Glen Rose Field of Flags!
