Welcome Neighbor has been welcoming new homeowners on behalf of local businesses for over 28 years, those we've personally invited to join, who present a generous welcome gift, along with our deep promotion of their local business and helpful information on our communities' resources. We do this in Western Delaware County, Greater West Chester, and Southern Chester County. I have personally visited and welcomed over 4,000 new homeowners in 28 years, and with my team and me together, to over 65,000 families. I laughingly say, to quote J. K. Simmons in the Farmer's Insurance ad, "I know a thing or two because we ve seen a thing or two." I have deep knowledge of what new homeowners want and need as they settle into their new homes. If you are a local independently owned business looking to build new customers with new homeowners, I believe we can help you. We"re local, personal and real--like you, perhaps. Not every business is a perfect fit for what we do, but if you fill a need for new homeowners, whether you are a restaurant, a contractor, a dentist, or a home and property service provider that fits the profile, I'd be happy to chat with you. Visit us at welcome neighborpa.com and request information or call me at 610 742 9341. Thank you!

I share this comedy drama story to remind business owners how important it is to teach youelr staff how to treat customers. They are your goodwill agents to whom you entrust your promise to customers. My take is that when I am selling our service to a prospective client, "I MAKE the promises, and YOU (my team) carry out the promises I make." That didn't happen here, and the man in the black wig needs an employee education program.Teamwork makes the dream work!

"WARNING – My Tire Shop Experience in West Chester

Now let me start by saying I’m a small business owner myself. I own a residential and commercial HVAC company. So I usually give local businesses the benefit of the doubt. But this experience was absolutely wild.

I took my truck to _________ Automotive Center in West Chester because I heard they were selling True Thread tires at cost. I try to support local businesses whenever I can, and honestly the price was incredible. That’s about where the good part of the story ends.

The second I walked in I felt like I had accidentally walked onto the set of a show.

The woman at the front desk looked completely uninterested in helping anyone. She smelled like cigarette smoke, barely looked up from the desk, and somehow still managed to get my name wrong even though I repeated it twice. She asked one of the techs to help me figure out what tires I needed.

Out walks this shorter guy with a beard who seemed extremely awkward and uncomfortable talking to people. Nice enough guy, but the whole interaction had a very “this guy does NOT want to be doing this job” vibe. My instincts were already telling me to leave… but the tires were cheap so I pushed forward.

While waiting, I could hear yelling and laughing from the shop like it was recess at a middle school.

I stepped outside to walk around back and saw the big goofy-looking technician hanging out near the garage talking to what looked like his girlfriend. I swear at one point he was showing her his firearm like he was trying to impress her.

Meanwhile the other tech I had talked to earlier was sitting in his broken-down [vehicle] in the parking lot eating lunch. At that point it started to make sense why my truck hadn’t moved in 45 minutes.

So I went back inside and asked to speak to the manager.

They brought me back to his office and the guy was sitting there wearing what looked like a black women’s wig. He could barely make eye contact and then actually asked me if I thought the wig looked good on him. I honestly didn’t know how to respond.

I was about ready to leave when he reassured me my truck would be done “any minute.”

I looked back into the shop and the two technicians were just standing there jabbing each other and talking, not working on anything that looked remotely like my truck.

After another 30 minutes I asked to speak with the owner.

Eventually he came out. He looked somewhat professional… but also like he had just come back from a five-beer lunch at Applebee’s. He marched out into the shop and started screaming at the two technicians. One of them immediately fired back yelling that he wasn’t a good dad.

Super awkward.

In the end my truck did eventually get done and I will say this:

The True Thread tires were a great price.

But the whole experience felt less like a tire shop and more like a comedy.

So if you’re looking for cheap tires… they’ve got them.

If you’re looking for professional service… find another shop in West Chester.

Just figured I’d warn everyone. 😅"

As a small business owner of over 50 years and one whose work is to introduce other small biz owners to new homeowners, I am often wondering how other small businesses have been impacted by our current economy and global/national situation. I've been thinking of compiling responses and sharing with each other the various impacts and to examine ways we might be supportive one another. I have concerns about the impact of private equity buying small businesses, whether AI is useful or intrusive to your biz, profit margins impact, digital marketing and it's use, and morale in somewhat uncertain times. If you have input, please email me your thoughts at [email protected], and please put "small biz impact" in the subject line. I will not share anyone's comments publicly. Yes, we have always been members of several chambers, and we once did a very useful roundtable of small business owners. It was one of the most helpful events I've ever participated in. This could be a more open version of a roundtable. Thanks to all who have any thoughts to share about your own business.

My post is in response to a thoughtful post about businesses competing in a gracious and thoughtful way. We are dedicated to building community in all ways we can.y response to him: As a business that represents small businesses to new homeowners, our company, Welcome Neighbor, thoroughly vets potential partner businesses for their ethics and customer care. I believe the small business community knits together the people of a community. That said, I am unhappy about how much of small business has been invaded by private equity firms that buy out and then hide behind the name and reputation of a solid, well run business. And my experience is that they generally have no loyalties to the [existing] business network, previous relationships, and the community at large unless these impact their bottom line. This happens because the decision process happens far away from the location of the latest acquisition. Autonomy of the former management team disappears, and the bean counters and attorneys call the shots. I wish we hadn't seen this personally far too often. It's painful. As for the competition, all bets are off.
