Seabadge at the Summit

Seabadge at the Summit Seabadge is a leadership and management training focused on the “how-to” aspects of managing a successful youth led Sea Scout program.

While Seabadge was developed as an advanced leadership training program for experienced Sea Scout adult leaders the course is open to all adult Scout leaders. The driving theme for the training is to “Focus on Youth”, which makes the course especially valuable for any Scout leader dealing with older youth. Seabadge does not cover topics like boating, knots, or other program-related materials found

in the Sea Scout Manual. Overview & Purpose
Seabadge is a weekend course that begins Friday afternoon and concludes with a closing ceremony before lunch on Sunday. Course participants and staff function as a model ship to help participants understand how a ship or youth-led unit should function. The curriculum includes twenty sessions, with established objectives, that are presented in a motivating and informative forum. The objectives of Seabadge are to:

Improve the understanding of leadership, management, and motivational skills among adult leaders. Provide management, leadership, and presentation skills and tools to adult leaders so that they may use and share them with others in their day-to-day Scout activities. Use the skills and tools acquired at Seabadge to improve the quality of the Sea Scout program. Encourage the development of lifelong contacts and sharing of resources by and between course participants and staff.

📢 A New, Simpler Renewal Cycle for All Members

Scouting America announced an important change at last week’s National Annual Meeting that will simplify the membership and unit renewal process nationwide.

📅 By February 2028, all members and all units will have a single, common renewal month of February.

This change is in response to feedback from unit leaders and other Scouters who asked for a simpler, more consistent renewal experience. We appreciate and value their input.

🔑 Key updates include:

🔹 Beginning September 2026, all units due for renewal will renew to February 2028.

🔹 All memberships and unit charters will have a common renewal month of February by February 2028

➡️ To simplify the process and in response to unit leaders' requests, Scouting America is returning to unit control of member renewals. If the unit does not renew a member, that member may renew themselves after the unit-only period closes.

⚠️ The current 60-day grace period will end December 31, 2026

🔹 Members renewing in November 2026 will still receive a 30-day grace period through December

🔹 Members renewing in December 2026 must renew by December 31 to avoid being dropped

🛠️ To support the transition during 2026 and 2027:

🔹 Beginning in September 2026, new and renewing units will use the standard charter fee plus pro rata fees through February 2028

🔹 No changes for new and renewing members through 2026

📌 Unit leaders should watch for updates from their local council, as additional guidance and implementation details may vary by council during the transition period.

This is a significant operational change designed to reduce complexity and create a more streamlined experience for volunteers, families, and councils alike.

Registration is now open for the 2027 National Wood Badge course, taking place November 7-12, 2027, at Summit Bechtel Reserve.

Wood Badge is widely recognized as Scouting America’s premier advanced leadership training experience for volunteers and professionals. More than a training course, it is an opportunity to strengthen leadership skills, exchange ideas with Scouters from across the country, and return home with a renewed vision for serving youth.

Participants work in patrols and develop skills in communication, teamwork, conflict management, project planning, and leading change. Just as importantly, they build lasting friendships and gain new perspectives that help strengthen local units and councils. Many Scouters describe Wood Badge as one of the most impactful and transformative experiences of their Scouting journey.

Hosting the course at the Summit Bechtel Reserve adds another level to the experience. Surrounded by more than 14,000 acres of adventure and natural beauty, participants will learn and grow in one of Scouting’s premier destinations.

For those looking to invest in themselves as leaders while creating an even stronger experience for youth, the 2027 National Wood Badge course is an incredible opportunity.
