A follower of this page recently wanted help identifying what he thought was a Red-shouldered Hawk, an relative of our local Red-tailed Hawk, but with a more easterly and southeasterly range (although some are regularly seen in our area).

The Red-shouldered is slightly smaller than the Red-tailed, and it prefers a more wooded habitat. Tree-dwelling snakes are a major source of food for these hawks. DBC member John Cebula is sharing some of his Red-shouldered photos from the Gulf Coast area of Florida.

Local friends, reminder that the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County sale is happening today and tomorrow at the DuPage County Fairgrounds. Saving Monarchs will be there talking Monarchs and offering our garden signs up for sale. Gardeners can get tips from plant experts as they shop from over 170 different species of native flowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees. It’s an awesome event with many wonderful people working there. Stop by and say hi. 😊

DBC's May meeting is Thursday May 14th.

This is a hybrid meeting with both Zoom and in-person at COD as options.

Thursday's speaker and topic: Saving the Piping Plovers Presented by Dr. Sarah Saunders, Audubon Great Lakes, Michigan, who will speak about current efforts to save Piping Plovers in the Great Lakes, highlighting the key strategies that have fueled this recovery, including nest monitoring and protection, predator management, annual banding, captive-rearing, and education and outreach. She will also showcase how long-term banding data have further strengthened these strategies, contributing to population growth. Despite these gains, challenges remain.

Please also plan to join the pre-meeting walk from 5:00-6:30 pm on Thursday. We will explore the Russell R. Kirt Prairie just south of the Human Science Center building where we have our DBC meetings. The area features three ponds in addition to grassland and trees.
