POTAWATOMI – We Are Still Here
Presentation
Sharon Hoogstraten will be the first of two speakers. She is a member of the Citizen Band Potawatomi Nation, with her home reservation in Oklahoma. Sharon is a professional photographer and has won two Emmys for animation. In her early retirement she spent a decade traveling to nine different Potawatomi Nations to take portraits of contemporary Potawatomi in their regalia. She then designed a stunning photo book filled with key information on Indian history and Potawatomi culture. Sharon will present some of her beautiful photographs and tell of her journey to reclaim her own Indian heritage. Her remarkable book is titled, Dancing for Our Tribe: Potawatomi Tradition in the New Millenium will be for sale at the event.
Our second speaker, Edward J. Mitchell lives on a Potawatomi reservation for the Prairie Band Nation in Kansas. In his youth his house had no electricity, running water, or telephone. In the 1950s & 1960s he attended a boarding school. He has studied Potawatomi culture for over fifty years. Eddie Joe has been a traditional gardener for his tribe & has worked with Native Americans in prison. He has been to all 50 states, 15 countries & stood on many lands where Potawatomi once resided. He grows Indian corn, beans, & squash and gathers wild onions, mushrooms, paw paws & more as he was taught to do as a child. He also creates beautiful traditional arts. He is a father, uncle and grandfather who teaches his family about what he has learned. Eddie Joe says he willingly shares some of his knowledge with whoever is interested. We are fortunate to have him speak and share about his life and culture.
You don’t want to miss hearing these two unforgettable speakers.
