When a patient arrived with no name, no medical history, and no known support system, Cassie Lewis refused to let him remain unidentified. Through compassion, patience, and genuine human connection, she built trust with the patient and uncovered information that led to a remarkable discovery: he had been reported missing for over a year after becoming separated from his family while traveling from California to Houston.

Cassie’s persistence and advocacy sparked a multidisciplinary effort that ultimately reunited the patient with his family, bringing healing and closure after months of uncertainty.

Cassie exemplifies the true spirit of nursing by seeing beyond the circumstances and recognizing the dignity and humanity of every patient. Her extraordinary compassion and determination truly embody nursing excellence.

It is with great sadness that we share that DAISY Lifetime Achievement Honoree Diane Carlson Evans has passed away.

A Vietnam War veteran, Diane was honored by the Army Nurse Corps Association, Navy Nurse Corps Association, and Society of Air Force Nurses. Her drive to have a memorial to women who served in Vietnam - including nurses - took a decade of activism and persistence, resulting in the first memorial in the United States to honor women in military uniform on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Diane was a beloved advocate for recognition of nurses through DAISY, and we will miss her friendship.

View Diane Althea Carlson Evans's obituary, find service dates, and sign the guestbook.

A Community Health Nurse in Ghana, Esther Sarfo, demonstrated extraordinary compassion and courage when she stopped to help a man experiencing an epileptic seizure on the roadside. While fearful onlookers believed the seizure was caused by “demonic possession,” Esther immediately stepped in, ensuring the patient’s safety and calmly educating the crowd that epilepsy is a medical condition requiring care and understanding.

Her support did not end there. After the patient regained consciousness, Esther accompanied him home alongside a local pastor and discovered he had stopped taking his medication because he could no longer afford it. Together, they provided financial support to help him access medical care and medication.

Esther’s dedication to public health extends far beyond this moment. This year alone, she has screened more than 100 women for breast cancer, helping break down misconceptions and encourage early detection. By caring for both individuals and communities, Esther exemplifies the true spirit of compassionate nursing.

Help us congratulate Esther by leaving a comment. You can read Esther's nomination story here: https://www.daisyfoundation.org/daisy-award/honorees/esther-sarfo
