DAISY Honoree and Medical Mission Grant recipient Amoo Yetunde had the incredible opportunity to serve as Nursing Team Lead for the 2026 Nigeria Medical Mission, organized by the U-VOL Foundation in partnership with Remnant Christian Network (RCN) in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria.

Together, a dedicated multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and volunteers provided care to more than 1,000 patients in the community.

Amoo coordinated the nursing team, supported patient assessment and triage, promoted health education, and helped ensure safe, compassionate, patient-centered care.

The experience was a powerful reminder of the impact of service, partnership, teamwork, and nursing leadership and the importance of expanding access to equitable healthcare.

Nick Caputo demonstrated the true meaning of patient advocacy during his emergency department preceptorship.

While caring for a woman who had returned to the ED for the third time in five days with persistent headaches and uncontrolled hypertension, Nick took the time to truly know his patient. Despite repeated treatments, her blood pressure remained resistant, and the plan was to discharge her once again.

Nick trusted his clinical instincts and spoke up. He shared his concerns with his preceptor and courageously advocated for further evaluation, despite being a student nurse.

A CT scan revealed an aortic dissection, and the patient was immediately transferred to Tufts Medical Center for a higher level of care.

Nick’s actions demonstrated clinical curiosity, critical thinking, moral courage, and unwavering commitment to patient safety. His willingness to speak up may very well have saved this woman’s life and helped ensure she returned home to her young family.

Mental health care can change lives not only for patients, but for their families, too.

When Nurse Joy cared for a young patient experiencing a mental health crisis, she also made a profound impact on the child’s mother. Having grown up surrounded by the stigma that mental health struggles were “fake,” the mother initially felt angry and resistant to her daughter’s hospitalization.

Joy listened without judgment and helped her see mental health in a new way. She reminded her that no one is “crazy” for seeking care for a mental health condition, just as no one is “crazy” for seeing a cardiologist for a heart condition. Her compassion and understanding became a turning point for the family.

Joy even offered to pray with the mother, asking for healing for her daughter and peace, wisdom, and understanding for the family.

Months later, the daughter is receiving the outpatient care she needs, and her mother is seeing a therapist herself. Inspired by Joy’s compassion, the young patient now hopes to become a pediatric mental health nurse so she can help children the way Joy helped her.

Help us congratulate Joy by leaving a comment on this post. You can read Joy's nomination story here: https://www.daisyfoundation.org/daisy-award/honorees/joy-lumintang

When a patient was rushed to the hospital after suffering a severe heart attack, his biggest concern wasn't himself; it was his beloved dog left at home alone.

After hearing his story during a shift handoff, nurse Sarah left her colleague Ryan with one simple request: "If you do anything today, find this man's dog."

Ryan coordinated with the Sheriff's Department, animal control, and a local shelter to ensure the dog was safe and cared for. Even better, the dog was soon adopted into a loving family, giving the patient tremendous peace of mind so he could focus on healing.

Help us congratulate Sarah and Ryan by commenting on this post.
