The Maryland Statewide Independent Living Council (Maryland SILC), in partnership with Centers for Independent Living (CILs) across the state, is inviting Marylanders to help shape the future of disability advocacy, services, and independent living supports.

Maryland SILC has launched a statewide Needs Assessment Survey and a series of Community Town Halls to ensure the voices of people with disabilities, family members, caregivers, and service providers are reflected in future planning and advocacy efforts across Maryland.

ARI joins the Maryland Department of Disabilities, the disability community, and advocates across the nation in recognizing the anniversary of the Olmstead decision and the profound impact it continues to have on the lives of people with disabilities.

Olmstead affirmed a simple but powerful principle: people with disabilities have the right to live, work, learn, and participate in their communities with the supports they need and the choices they deserve. More than a legal decision, it represents a continuing movement toward greater independence, self-determination, and equal opportunity.

Today, we honor the advocates whose efforts made this landmark ruling possible, celebrate the progress that has been achieved, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing work ahead. ARI stands in solidarity with people with disabilities, Centers for Independent Living, and partners throughout Maryland and across the country as we continue the fight to protect, preserve, and expand disability rights for future generations.

The promise of community living belongs to everyone, and together we will continue working to ensure that promise becomes a reality for all.

Honoring Olmstead: Maryland’s Unwavering Promise to Community Living

On the 27th anniversary of the landmark Olmstead Supreme Court decision, the Maryland Department of Disabilities reaffirms a core civil rights principle: people with disabilities belong in their communities.

Olmstead established that the unnecessary segregation of individuals with disabilities is unlawful discrimination. While recent federal guidance has raised questions about the scope of state obligations, Maryland’s commitment remains absolute. Community living promotes dignity, independence, and stronger communities for everyone.

True inclusion is not just about where services are delivered; it is about providing meaningful choice, equal opportunity, and the supports needed to succeed. Maryland will continue working alongside advocates, families, and partners to protect and expand community-based services, ensuring the promise of Olmstead remains a reality for generations to come.

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and honors the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

As we reflect on the significance of freedom, we also recognize the importance of ensuring that all people have the opportunity to participate fully in their communities and pursue lives of choice and independence.

Please note that Accessible Resources for Independence (ARI) will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. We will reopen and resume normal business hours on Monday, June 22.
